83 Wing Standard - light bulb replacement

Postby Dakotaman » Wed Oct 17, 2012 8:08 pm

My wife and I went for a ride on the wing today, and as darkness was setting, I noticed my headlight was not providing light. My low beam went on it. Had to use the bright to get home. I only have a manual for an 83 aspencade, and it says the replacement bulb is a H4 Philips 12343/99 or equivalent. Is that the same for a Standard too? The manual don't show how to replace a bulb though. It's been awhile since I have had a bike, and I was wondering if someone can tell me how to replace it. Would Canadian Tire have that kind of bulb, or an auto parts store?

Behind the instrument cluster is the adjustment knob.Remove it and the large nut to remove the headlight. The lamp should be avaiable at any auto store.Do test it first, you could have a switch or wiring problem and the lamp is OK.
As always, clean any fingerprints from the lamp before installing it.

He's right, a lot of the time on the 1100 it's the high beam switch that is the problem, rather than the bulb itself.

Oh, and when he says "clean any fingerprints" he should say " clean any fingerprints using isopropyl alcohol". :)

When you say the Hi-beam switch, do you mean the whole Low/High beam switch? It's just the low beam that isn't working. This wing does not have any kind of faring, just a windshield. Does a standard have an adjustment knob?

Oh my.I didn't catch that.My bad.
The standard... Remove the 2 screws from the chrome bezel and lift it up from the bottom. There's a catch at the top.
And yes,I refer to the Hi/Lo switch on the left.It is a dual contact switch.Power goes in and you select which wire it goes out to.I have seen the switch contacts burnt.Especially the one that is used most(low beam)and the other side be OK.So test the lamp or wire for volts to determine which one is bad.
Sorry for the mis-information mate.

I replaced the H4 bulb with a Sylvania one, and it works! The only problem I have, is with the front of the headlight unit, the glass part doesn't seem to be flush with the retainer and rim ring. On the side of my headlignt are lamp assembly mounting screws which I removed to get the unit apart. I'm pretty sure I put it back the same way, cause the rim ring and retainer ring are flush with the headlight housing body. Maybe I'll look at it again tomorrow.

Here are a couple of pics of my Headlight. If you look at one side, it is not as flush as the other side is.

I remember a "alignment"screw that allows for left to right movement of the lamp housing independent of the outer shell. It usually has a spring to keep tension on the assembly. You may notice that the lamp frame has a top and bottom pivot point. The adjustment is on the side.

One other thing that comes to mund, the globe is indexed, there are tabs on the back that have to line up. Just trying to cover every base.

I will try looking into it soon. We went for a ride yesterday, came back after dark, and the new sylvania headlight bulb is brighter than my old one. And it is the same wattage. I don't know how long the old one has been used, but the dim filament on it had a big gap in it. Thanks for responding!!

The outer ring is nice and flush, and I noticed the tabs also. It is the inner ring that turns the lamp left or right. The adjustment screw is on the left side of the two rings.
