knocking on right cylinders side

Postby lilcity » Wed Mar 17, 2010 5:00 pm

Hello all . Just purchased a 80 interstate which has a issue with knock on right side of engine. Not overly loud but there. Anyone in philadelphia area who can assess ? Compression seems good, no smoke issues i can see, no shavings in oil. ANY THOUGHTS HELPFUL. I THOUGHT I'D START WITH TIMING BELTS. Thanks Curt aka lilcity

Well timing belts are good to change if you haven't already, but if the belts were such that you were having things knock together, you'd be having a lot more problems than just knocking - and your compression would be down to about, oh, zero.

I'd first just pull the valve covers off and check the valve clearances.

knock on right side of engine

Hello all. Hope this is the right place for this post. I just bought a 80' interstate and it has a knock in right cylinder. no smoking,no frags in oil and its not that loud but there. Do water pumps fail often? Thought i'd change timing belts anyway from reading your other comments. Btw this is my first wing. Anybody in philadelphia with knowledge in this aera. Thanks Curt, :ugeek: aka lilcity.

If you are sitting on the bike, to the left in the front is where the water pump is located, so I doubt that is it.

If anything, it's more likely to be the fuel pump that you're hearing. Go to Harbor Freight and buy one of their cheap mechanic's stethoscopes, and you should be able to single out the exact place it's coming from.

Thanks gents. I purchased the scope and will check carbs.Oil light is starting to flicker. Oil level ok. I only start eng for tests. Put less than a mile on bike since purchase. I'm in the hunt. Curt :ugeek:
