Rear brakes locking on my 82 GL 1100

Postby tripinkansas » Mon Oct 22, 2012 11:00 pm

Thanks to this forum I've repaired every problem I've had with this bike, except this. Rear brake lock up after 12-18 miles of riding even if I don't touch the brake. Re-Built caliper, nothing. Re-built caliper with correct seals, nothing. Switched working caliper from front, nothing. Drained and flushed all lines, tried Dot 5 fluid (mechanics suggestion), and of course new pads. Brake will release after about 40 minutes, or of course releasing pressure through bleeder. Currently not riding much, useing front brakes only. Don't think it makes much difference but am carrying large side-car (will post pic. if I can figure out how to). Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

It sounds like the return port is clogged in the master cylinder, might need to take it all apart and clean out that very tiny return port hole that goes into the cylinder part, Where is it? remove the plastic part that the hose is attached to and look into one of those holes, this hole is tiny it will require a very small wire off a small wire brush to poke thru it, it would be best to take apart the entire MC for a good clean up anyway...Hey maybe even a new kit depending on the condition of the parts ..Read WingAdmin. instructions on the Rear Brake how too..Oh hey make sure the brake pedal isn't sticking and is freely moving up and down too, I'm sure you probably checked that though..Good luck...

Get almost the same problem on my Honda. The easy way his to get a new hydrolique hose. Cost around 100,00$ . You will be able to get one from a hydrolique hose maker. The rubber inside the hose his to hold.

Yup, this CAN be caused by a seized rear brake pivot or deteriorating rubber hoses...but 95% of the time it's the tiny return port. Have a look at step 17 onward in How to rebuild your rear master cylinder.

I had the same problem two weeks ago. I had already rebuilt the rear caliber several months ago. So it was time to rebuild the master break cylinder. It was all gunked up inside and the return hole was clogged. At the same time I replaced the hose. Now I it works great. It was bad enough to cause the left side of the tire to rub on the strut. Make sure you flush all the fluid out, it still may be contaminated. Good luck.

You can get replacement aftermarket braided stainless brake lines for a lot less than that, and the stainless brake lines will make braking so much better on these old bikes.

Thanks for all the input gentlemen. Will be re-building brake cylinder as soon as snow and ice set in. Don't want to start till I have to, the side-car has to come off, and I'll be replacing mufflers at same time. Thanks again, will re-post when finished.
