What Size Fuse?

Postby portugeezer » Thu Oct 25, 2012 3:21 pm

I have been trying to do a bit of work on the Aspencade every day. Today I decided to get the 12v socket working. I bought the marine type with the spring loaded cover. Inside the faring I found all kinds of really bad wiring. The PO had a 30 amp fuse and a toggle in the circuit. The 30 amp fuse was in line after a 2 amp fuse. I made the hole larger with a round file and redid the wiring neatly with solder and shrink tubing. What size fuse should be in that holder to run either a GPS or phone charger? I've included a couple pics. The wiring was so bad I had to share with you guys!

The round thing next to the socket is a short carriage bolt with the head painted black to cover the hole left by the toggle!

Neither a GPS or a phone charger would ever draw more than a few amps, so a 5 amp fuse would be safe.

I've seen FAR worse wiring before, including some that I found in my GL1500 when I got it. At least yours was FUSED! :)

I have one installed on my 1500 inside the left pocket (soft cover) on a 5 AMP fuse for things like phone charger, iPod charging, etc.
Has been trouble free for years so far - The GPS is also on a 5 AMP fuse but I have it wired directly so it is HOT all the time..If I ever forget to take it off the bike I will end up with a dead battery I suspect but I never leave it so it doesn't get stolen.

Look for a phone charger that will work or include a USB outlet for iPod or other device charging. ON long rides I can leave it plugged in and the iPod never wears down ...all day music of my choosing...

I had some 7 amp fuses so I used one of those. I suppose I will just leave it.
