Neon coil pack and/or coil relays

Postby NKYWinger » Mon Oct 29, 2012 1:16 pm

I've been reading on here, as well as NGW & CGW about the Neon coil pack conversion as well as the procedure for putting in relays. I understand the science behind those two, but the bigger question is: How do I tell if it will help my bike? It starts instantly and runs smoothly. Mileage is usually in the low 40's. How does a fella know when it's time to consider either (or both) of these mods? I'm thinking they aren't in the cards for me, just yet, but how will I tell? I bow to the collective wisdom hereforth gathered....

How can you tell? Well the bike will tell ya, my coils where ok, I had no real issues, I didn't add a relay and I used the original spark caps with the resistors in, ok, the bike seems to do better at higher speeds, it goes well up and over 85 with no problem, I used the wires that Todd sent me with the coil pack...It runs just fine....I rode to KC and back with them in place...Not one problem and yes it rained on me, I also have a Alt. conversion in place too, but like Scotty said Don't fix what ain't broke... :D I just wanted to see if there was a difference and I wanted to see if it would melt out my spark units...nope it did not...I guess I'm one of those guys that have to learn the hard way, in this case I'm happy I did..and I left the plugs alone too..Just because it works for me don't mean it will work for you....But if you or anyone else has issues with their coils this is a great fix..

Im with Lil' Beave and scotterichmond on this one. If your stock coils are OK then dont worry about it,but if they are acting up and stock replacements are hard to find(at least ones that are not cracked) then the Neon coil is a cheap and reliable alternative. You would need a Dyno to see any difference the coils MAY make. The stock system works well right up until old age takes its toll. Like L.B. I am a tinkerer, I like to mess with things 8-)

Todd and Beav-
Hmmmmmm; since I already have new caps to put on and I have a length on new plug wire, I'm thinkin' I may as well be proactive and put on the Neon coils when I replace everything else this winter.
Being a Navy Chief, I like to stay ahead of the power curve and this may be one more little thing to keep a 30 year old bike running great.

You wont hurt your bike if you do make the change over. I havnt had time to do an article on how I set up the one I sent to Lil Beaver, I do plan on it in the near future. If you are in a hurry You can find what you need on the Saunders site.. If you can wait for a while then I will post it later. 8-)
