oil leakage at weep hole

Postby moparman68 » Sun Dec 16, 2012 6:05 pm

ok guys i need somemore of ur help......my 82 gl1100 will leak oil at the weep hole if i leave it sitting at idle after it warms up, if i leave it running it starts to get warm, gauge maybe at most goes half way up but then i get a little oil leakage, its oil not antifreeze, my brother said it was a bad o ring on the pump, there is a step by step process for removing and changing this in the forum, very detailed with pics and such, trouble is I dont want to just change sumthing and it turns out that wasnt the issue. is my oil pump going bad, is it just the o-ring? is there some way to test the oil pump and if so how? there is roughly 51xxx miles the gauge reads however the gauge hasnt worked since i have had it so i really dont know how many miles are on it. the first 2 weeks i had it it never leaked a drop and then all of a sudden it started to leak (I HATE LEAKS) this bike sat for 2yrs before i got it. any help would be much appreicated, this is the first 'wing i have ever had but certainly not the last :P

The most common source of the leak is the water pump rear bearing.

i dont have any way of taking and posting pics at the moment (camera isnt working on the phone) however if u look on the bottom towards the ground in front of the motor there is a small hole that goes ryte into the motor right around the water pump housing, this is where it is leaking oil, however there isnt any coolant leakage, just oil and the oil hasnt mixed with antifreeze

The water pump has 2 sealed roller bearings.Either one can leak into the weep hole.
There are also "O" rings on either side that can leak but it's more likely the pump. The pump is direct drive from the engine.I would drain the antifreeze and see if the impeller has any lateral play.it should not.

On the right lower part of the engine, there is a cover plate.remove it and exteract the oil pickup screen and clean it too.
I suppose it's time to replace the timing belts while your there. :)

The "pump" up front is just a water pump it is run by the shaft the runs the oil pump in the rear of the engine..oil can leak out in three places..the oil seal, large o ring and the attachment bolts holes. The leak can be caused by a worn oil seal or bad bearings in the water pump which damages the oil seal or bad crush washers under the attachment bolts or bad o ring; pic may help.
