82 GL1100 All lights and no power!?!

Postby Arelles » Mon Dec 17, 2012 4:14 pm

Gentlemen,
Last year I replaced the original solenoid with a Ford F150 (as suggested) and cured my starter woes. This year i removed the rear wheel, while getting the new tire mounted, rebuilt the rear brakes, changed and lubed final drive, re-assembled all and went for a test drive. After checking out the initial ride, I told the wife to grab her helmet, we were going for ice cream! Back on the bike 5 minutes later, turn on the ignition and all lights come on dim, including both turn signal indicators. No solenoid click, starter cranks when connected directly to the battery. Suggestions on where to start? :?:
Thanks in advance.

** Near dead battery, corroded battery contacts or ground lug, poor connection from the battery to the 2 red wires that were on the original solenoid.****

Did the bike crank when using another battery(jumper cables) or the one on the bike???? And how did you manage to crank it.Where were the electrical connections made.?

Thanks for the replies, I jumpered from the positive side of the battery to the post on the starter (very briefly) just to test the starter. Since the bike started well after the installation of the new rear tire and wheel, I assumed that the battery was charged, at least enough for starting. The test ride was about 10 minutes, not long enough to completely recharge the battery, but it gave no indication of being "weak" when starting. No corrosion on the cables at the battery, connections still clean from the solenoid replacement. I did not attempt a "jump start" from another vehicle.
Thanks again, really appreciate the suggestions.
