Brake Question?

Postby eveready » Sun Dec 23, 2012 11:01 am

I'm new to this forum and Goldwings. I just bought a good running 1982 interstate that needs front brake rotors & calipers. I was on ebay looking at parts and found 82 aspecade parts. My question is are these models brakes interchangale? Thanks for any help I get here.

Sorry no pics. to post. I went to the manual section and downloaded the parts manual, it showed different part # for rotor and caliper on Int. and asp. So my next question is does anyone on here have left front rotor & caliper for 82 interstate for a reasonable price?

The Aspencade has a vented disc while the Interstate is non vented. Probably would make the vented disc thicker overall. Just checked my service manual and the Standard and Interstate front standard is 4.8 to 5.2 mm (service limit is 4.0 mm) and rear is 6.9 to 7.1 mm (service limit is 6.0 mm). Aspencade standard is front and rear 9.9 to 10.1 (service limit is 9.0 mm).

Hope this helps.

Thank you for that info. That explains the different part #. I'll have to keep looking for the right ones.

Can you give us an idea of the problems with the front brakes? Were the brake parts missing? Are the rotors worn, warped or cracked? It is a rare caliper that cannot be overhauled inexpensively. More information would be helpful.

I just bought the bike, the left front rotor is grooved to excess and the caliper was thrown away by P.O.. The right rotor is fine and the caliper was removed and tore apart, I hope to rebuild it.

to answer your question YES "BUT" the rotors on the aspencade are thicker so you need calipers of the asp also. I have rotors for an 83 interstate but not sure about calipers I'll let you know later today as to what I have - fr1tz

Sounds good Fritz. I went on the parts finder and four salvage yards contacted me with parts from 3 other states, but I'd rather keep the money here in Oh. and with a rider then them. So what do you have to have for the left rotor and caliper? I'll have to buy new mounting hardware, I didn't get any with the bike. Tiffin is about 50 mi. south of Toledo. I'm 150 mi. from you.

Sorry Fritz, I bought the stock rotor & caliper with the hardware with shipping was $107.00 from Cal. We'll see what I get I still might need yours, thats the way my luck goes. The caliper bracket for yours looks nothing like mine on ebay and they wanted $35.00 ea. without bolts. We have a little over 5 in. of snow now but still coming down and wind is picking up.

Thanks Fritz that is very much apprecated. I allmost forgot I need stock drivers footpegs from the frame out it has 1" angle iron on it for pegs. This bike was in ruff shape, but runs very good.
