Hole in bottom of case GL1100

Postby truckerguy » Mon Dec 31, 2012 8:47 pm

Hello! I have a 82 goldwing GL1100 that I've had just a short time, on the bottom of the motor towards the front of the case there's a small hole a little larger than a hose from a can of carb spray that keeps dripping oil. Im Assuming it drips while I ride because sometimes ill smell a little burnt oil and it definitely dips when I park it. Can anyone tell me why the hole is there and how I can get it to stop dripping oil? The hole definitely looks like it supposed to be there like its factory cast. Any help would be great and much appreciated!!Thank you all!!

Water pump and oil seals are pooched.
BTDT.

It's a fair bit of work, but nothing really tricky. New OEM pump's are 150-175, O ring and gasket set is ~30.

Thanks a lot for the info looks like I've got a little bit of a job ahead of me. The bike sat for a while before I got it so I guess this is to be expected. Thanks again! ;)

Better get a replacemnt water pump as the mecahnical seal sounds faulty. What happens is the the pump bearing give up first then the mechanical seal follows soon afterwards. The replacment genuine water pumps have a metal impellor rtaher than the original plastic impellor wjich probably has been touching the casing side as well- NEW PUMP AND GASKET!!!
When removing the water pump I found that loosening the bolts and easing the pump away its easy to remove the bottom hose and wire gaurd and then replace the hose loosly on the pump before bolting it up
