6 wires coming out of 82 GL100 motor

Postby timwingard » Wed Jan 09, 2013 12:24 pm

I have a bike I purchased that has a 82 motor sitting in an 83 frame. One of the two bikes was a Aspencade, but I'm not sure which wire harness I have. I have an issue with no spark which I am trying to resolve and an issue with the neutral light not working, having to put in the clutch to get the motor to crank. While investigating both these issues I noticed a six wire plug dangling underneath the motor which is not plugged into anything. It appears to be coming from the front bottom timing belt area. The wires are braided vs plastic insulation and are Yellow, Green, Blue, Red, Black and white.

Can someone tell me what each of these wires are for and where I should be looking for the other side of the six wire receptable?
When looking at the 82 wiring diagram, I am not finding this plug.

This may or may not be good news for you.
What you describe are the wires from the gear selector switch on a 1983 Aspencade.
Look at the schematic for that one.It has the plug and color code you describe.
Even tho it's different, it appears you only need one of those wires hooked to your harness.Just dog off the others.

Thanks for the response. Hmmm, very interesting since I was told by the previous owner that he had switched motors with an 82. I prefer the 83 since it has better gearing for the interstate and I was contemplating swapping the motor. Maybe I will not even have to consider that now. Let me check out the wiring diagram and see if I can figure out what's up. Thanks :)

This is the gear position switch wiring. On the <83 and 83 Interstate, there are only two wires, one for Neutral and one for 5th (overdrive). On the 83 Aspencade, there are wires for every gear. You'll have to connect them as appropriate:

1983 Aspencade wires:
Neutral - Green
1 - Yellow
2 - White
3 - Blue
4 - Red
5 - Black

1983 Interstate wires:
Neutral - Light Green/Red
5 - Green/Orange

So you need to connect the green wire on the engine harness to the light green/red wire on the bike harness, and the black wire on the engine harness to the green/orange wire on the bike harness. The connectors will obviously not mate, so you'll either need to cut the connectors off and hard-wire them, or (preferably) buy one of each connector, and make your own custom adapter.

Thanks for the info. My service manual is in the garage so I will pull it out tomorrow and take a look at the diagram and see if I can figure out where those wires are to connect to. If the aspencade was the 83, then he might have swapped out the harness with the 82. I definately have the 83 frame. It appears I have the 83 engine on the bike from what you have told me. The previous owner rewired everything because he labeled all the wires with masking tape. I have regular interstate tach and speedometer. I have the aspencade display unit in a box in the basement. Whatever he did it was close to right, but not completely. This is not my main bike, I have two others I ride, but I would like to get this one going too. Thanks for your help.

Well after looking at the various wiring diagrams and with your help I understand now why my neutral light isn't working. Thanks for the help. The Green wire from the engine needs to connect to the light green/red wire on the harness on both the 82 or 83 Interstate wiring harness. The overdrive wire is only applicable if I have the 83 harness and 83 tach I believe. First I will tackle the neutral light.

Did you sort out the "no spark" issue?

Hi Virgil, You were actually helping me on that issue under the post "starting issue". I continue to work on it but I was also having an issue with having to hold the clutch in to get it to crank while trying to test it. So I am hoping getting the neutral wire hooked up correctly will at least get me one step closer and allow me to focus totally on the ignition issue with an extra hand. I have been continuously working the issue and pulling my hair out and will reply as to what I have done under the other post. As I mentioned before, this may be an 82 wiring harness being used on a 83 apencade bike, minus some of the electronics and pumps. The PO told me it ran for a while and died.

I attempted to fix this today but didn't have any luck. I will try again in a few weeks. What I did was take the green wire of the six wire gear sensor and try to clean off the insulation. This was not as easy as I anticipated since this wire has some sort of heat resistant insulation. I did see wire however and attached a wire with an aligator clip. I then disconnected the red junction 6 pin box that leads to engine sensors and fan. I connected the other end of the wire that was attached to the green wire to the pin in the red junction box corresponding to the Light Green/Red wire. I was thinking that this would give me the neutral light but that didn't happen. Since it was dripping wet all day here and I was working outside, I didn't attempt to resolve this any more today.

I would have thought the light would come on, check the fuses, maybe one got blown without you knowing it..

I knew if I looked hard enough I would find the answer I needed. I just asked this question in the Tech Forum. I had already figured out that the green wire was the neutral indicator. Now I can just eliminate the rest and I'll be good to go.

This is a great forum.
