Postby fr1tz » Fri Jan 11, 2013 9:45 am

Hey Yall I'am about to rebuild my carbs on my 82 trike, purchased 4 kits and come to find out no air cut off valves came with it, my question is are these valves necessary? how important are they ? what do they do ? they are quite expensive, Thanks - fr1tz

I'm not positive of the availability or cost.
Yes,they need to work properly. There purpose is to control fuel delivery during deceleration.A non-functioning valve can lead to backfiring on deceleration.
The valves need to move freely in the chamber.
Generally,I've found contamination of the casting has seized the little piston thats attached to the diaphragm and just need to be cleaned up.
Some diaphragms have cracked, hardned or turned to gum and needed to be replaced.
Just be careful,if you need to replace them,a "kit" usually refers to the parts for one carb only. Not for all of them.So if you need all 4 replaced...you need 4 "kits" unless its specified the sale has 4 of them in it.

Please don't use Carb cleaner on these carbs....It will attack the rubber.I and others use compressed air, water or brake cleaner.
Oh,and get the slides to move butter smooth and test them with your shop vac before you put the carbs back on.

If you really want to do it right, spring for Randakk's carb guide.
