Painted Emblems, Now What Clear Do I Use?

Postby patbrandon1 » Tue Jan 15, 2013 9:16 pm

Hi Gang. This is a question for the painters out there. I painted the side cover emblems from my GL1100 with enamel I bought at a hobby shop. Now I want to cover them with clear, because I NEVER want to do that again. I am not good at little stuff like that, but they came out a lot better than they were. What kind of clear do I put over them?

Here is a pic.

Those look excellent. I wish I had that kind of patience and a hand that steady! I would ask at the hobby shop, if you feel you really need clear. Tell them what you are painting and that it will be outside. Automotive products could give you a world of trouble, with adhesion and lifting the enamel. The only thing that pops into my head with hobby/spray clear is UV protection. If the clear for the enamel doesn't have it, I would think some yellowing would occur...

Thank you guys. Do you think they will be okay without clear? I was just thinking about the clear maybe protecting the paint a little. But if you think it won't really help that much, and really, they don't get that much abuse being on the sides right? Thanks again.

Oh yeah, if anyone wants me to paint theirs, I have a lot of paint left over, even after painting the emblems that were looking bad that are still on the bike. I'll use the paint for free, but I charge $25,000.00 to paint EACH emblem. I make house calls for an extra five bucks  ;)

Thanks Johnyy. It helped that the hobby shop had some very, very tiny, high quality paint brushes. A pack of 5 various sizes and shapes, was about 4 bucks, but made the job a lot easier. Are you going to clear coat yours?

Here are a set of the emblems on the side cover. It took a while to find new clips for them.

I started on redoing my emblems-I started with the "GL" emblem on the front fender. The paint was really chipped, so I was trying to figgure out what type of remover I could use without ruining the plastic. After some head scratching, I picked up a bottle of NON-acetone fingernail polish remover. I let the emblem soak for a 1/2 hour or so-and presto- the paint came off with very little effort :P -and the plastic is as good as new! Regards, Johnyy

Those look very good.

So what kind of clips did you use and where did you find them?

Thank you Wilcoy02. I used some square clips I found at Gilroy's Hardware store. Although they didn't have the tiny rubber grommet that the original clips had, I used an old bicycle inner tube and cut some little rubber washers for underneath them. I figured they had them on there to maybe stop vibration or stop them from breaking the little post off. Here is a pic of one and the little rubber washer I made from the tube. They were 23 cents each.

Thanks for that info Johnyy. I do need to pull that one off and paint it as well. Gonna pick up a bottle of that remover tomorrow. The cover ones that I did first, I just cleaned them with this stuff called TSP that I wash semi-gloss painted walls with before I paint them. I hope the paint sticks good enough from that stuff. It is supposed to open the paint a little so the new paint sticks. It works good on walls. Did you start painting yours yet?

Patbrandon1 these look great .. can you please confirm how you got them to that state ... were these all hand painted? or did you use any tricks to spray them with gold first and then mask off certain areas etc?

Thankls for the info on the clips.
Seems like a lot of us are in the painting mood.
I am nearing completing 12 pieces of the bike. In the middle of the badges.

As far as the clear i am going to use on the emblems I got the info from the hobby shop. He also showed me an article in one of the hobby books.

Pledge floor care. Tile & vinyl floor FINISH.

Just dip in the clear liquid and it is self leveling. Make sure the paint has had a few days to dry before dipping. I hung my badge by a string and hung it up to dry.

I tried to paint the emblem.I sprayed the entire emblem-then wiped the suface with a rag-but my 50+ year old hands shake -so that didnt go so well Looks like I will try masking tape next. That floor finish sounds like a good idea. Regards, Johnyy

Sorry Greg, I just now saw this reply question. Not sure how that happened, but I wasn't ignoring you. I did it all without masking anything. The brush set I bought had a good brush for each area to paint. I should take a pic and show them to you...BRB.

Okay, I took a pic of the brushes. They had numbers on them, and they were as follows. 4, 1, 5/0, and 10/0. I used them according to which portion of the emblem I was painting. It actually wasn't that hard, just don't drink any coffee first. ;)

I painted the black first, then the red, then the gold. When I did the gold, I had a q-tip, slightly moistened with mineral spirits on the ready in case I botched any spots, so I could quickly wipe it off. Only happened a few times. I guess I would just say, use patience, and realize, this isn't rocket surgery, and we aren't curing cancer here. It is a hobby, have fun.
