hey all!
in the last few hundred miles I hear a quite loud friction/whstling noise that comes from the timing belt area.the noise comes and goes,it can start after passing a bump or hole on the road, somtimes while turning..and then it goes away, until the next time..
(the bike is a 1980 1100 interstate and the timing belt was replaced with an OEM one ,only about 3000 miles)
I suspect that the noise comes from the belt tentioners (bearings dry/worn??) ..is this a known problem?
I will order new tentioners , but since I live outside the US , shipping takes time.
any do's or don't during this time? can I face a belt failure ifI continue riding with this noise :? ?

These are interference motors so if you suspect the tensioners are bad you should pull it apart and at least check them if want to continue riding it.If one of the tensioners seize it will snap a belt and bend your valves.Lot more work and exspence then.

Check to ensure the tensioner attachment bolts are tight, and not pivoting. The tensioner springs are only for getting the correct tension before tightening everything down.

Also, ensure the springs aren't rubbing against the belt, I've had that happen before. The sharp end of the spring occasionally rubbed agains the belt, making a bizzare squealing and leaving rubber dust under the belt cover. Swapped the spring end to end, and all was good.

Don't forget. The spedo cable is there too,or at least near. While riding it too can make funny noises. It can be unhooked from the wheel for a test run.

s_lapid, yes, pull that spedo cable and make sure that isn't it first. If it isn't, have a look at this...

Remember to check, check, check, before you do anything. Measure twice and cut once. Whenever I measure once and cut twice, the board still ends up too short. ;)
