Wierd electrical issue when starting

Postby CajunSpike » Fri Feb 01, 2013 10:31 am

I'm on my second 83 GL1100A, but this one has a strange problem.
It has developed an issue as such:
turn key on.
dash lights up.
hit starter button
starter clicks...
dashboard power appears to cut off...all power from battery appears to be lost.

The last time this happened, the bike cranked up normally 5 or 6 times..then I went to start it again
and bingo, power lost.

I've attached a bigger battery.
Tried attaching the battery ground somewhere else besides the stock ground cable.

I'm almost getting the feeling there is some sort of relay in the system thats getting old and cutting out.

Where the positive battery cable connects, I know theres a module with a fuse..could that be going bad and causing this?

check your connections first, especially the battery ground. they become corroded over time. if all the connections are good, turn the bike on and jump the soleniod. this will tell you if the problem is the solinoid or the starter. if not, you may have to investigate the start button or the key switch and related wiring.

I can understand if the solenoid is not letting the starter crank, but with the digital dash going blank...it almost HAS to be the hot/ground on the battery.

I'm gonna see if i can just trash the current battery cables and get new ones.
AND then test the solenoid...

Check the battery cables themselves - they can corrode internally where they connect to the connectors. Next time it's dead like that, give the battery cables a wiggle and see if it comes back to life.

dont for get to have a close look at the dog bone fuse! maybe even replace it with the blade type fuse mod.

I second the dog bone fuse....If it's cracked,corroded,etc....there will be power on the solenoid lug that goes to the battery positive but none on the 2 red wires that plug into it(when the dash lights go out).
I usually cut the 2 red wires off the solenoid plug and solder a 30 amp fuseholder to them...attach the other end under the battery lug of the solenoid.Problem solved.

This leads other modifications by soldering direct the 3 yellow stator wires, regulator wires, pulse coil wires and adding a relay to switch the regulator.
There's a post about that....viewtopic.php?f=5&t=12522

It helps to stabilize the entire charging and ignition system....
Your in the same area as I am and with the same vintage bike...Expect the same corrosion problems in the plugs.

I'm familiar with the stator plug issue, having done lots of reading..
the connection there seems pretty decent...
but..

is the 'dog bone fuse' the fuse on that box/relay the positive wire connects to?
Just dunno the term.

Unplug the 4 wire plug on the starter solenoid, open the trap door. The fuse bar (link) is there secured by 2 screws.

I've done some reading...and from what I see, you all probably hit this issue on the head.

I'm feeling its probably time to replace that solenoid.....

So I ordered a cheap starter relay from ebay only to get one that the factory wiring harness does NOT plug into the new relay.

Is this common?

This is the relay I have now...anybody has directions on how to wire it?

http://www.ebay.com/itm/360410492954?ss ... 1497.l2649

Also went to local honda dealer. Would have to order it and it would cost $102.....

shame on them for not sending installation directions, bad cop no donut. i believe the wiring goes like this: place the solenoid on a table in front of you with the two lugs towards the right and the fuse towards the left. lug labeled "B" goes to battery, lug labeled "M" goes to starter motor. there are two brass connectors and two aluminum conectors. the "red" and "red/white" wires from the regulator go to the aluminum connectors closest to the fuse, r/w furthest from you and red closest. the next wire is from the starter button "red/yellow" goes to brass connector closest to you and the other wire from clutch switch "green/red" goes on last, furthest from you. this is only my opinion based on wiring scematics and how it is set up on my bike.

So it's pretty apparent to be able to use this relay, I'll have to cut off the factory 4 wire plug from the bike?

I did find a photo elsewhere as to what color wires go where and your description matches that.

Now I need to decide if I'm brave enough to hack into the harness......

Ok, I chickened out.

I put aside the cheap relay that would take rewiring and ordered another 'pluy and play' relay.
Its due in Monday.

I'll post what happens.

Problem fixed.

Final solution was to replace the starter relay with a $40 plug and play unit and replace the old battery cables.

Got new battery as old one was questionable.

For a 30 year old bike with 32,000 miles on it, the
engine starts with a flick of the button.

100% appreciation for all those who took the time to help out.

What solenoid did you wind up using? I'm pretty sure that I'm having the same problem. Thanks

Bought this item from Ricks motor sports...fit just right.

Years after I sold it, I now realize my first rootbeer/gold gl1100a had the same problem.

As an aside when you get the chance check the internal condition of the starter motor . A build up of carbon dust from the bushes can give a similar problem as can the condition of the earth lead from the battery to frame ( oxidation of cable ).

Just a thought - hope it helps.
The only silly question is the one you don`t ask. Everything else is game.

I do like ricks electrical parts, and his stators.

But i went with the Ford 150 truck Starter solenoid, it is the most heavy duty ford solenoid for the Ford F150 truck, it was $22.00 from NAPA, or any of the local auto parts stores.

The F150 solenoid i bought has a life time warranty, but,!! the best thing is I can get it anywhere no waiting for the part.

Hell, that Ford relay has been on my Ford for 53 YEARS, and still going strong...

Can't go far wrong with overkill on electrical systems.

My bike is the same way. 29,000 miles and I cant get my finger off the starter button quick enough. Rebuilt the starter a month ago and it's flawaless when starting. This ressurection of my bike has been fun.

Ok, just so I can be sure of what I have been reading.......

I too need to rebuild my starter but the issue I am having is that when I push the start button all I get is a click in the relay. Tried to jump across the two posts and nothing. Put the meter to the battery and started with 11.9 pushed the button and went to 12.1. Checked power at the relay and got 11.9 but when I pushed the button dropped to 0. Checked at starter post and engine case and nothing before or after pushing button. Only a click. Thinking I was smarter than the machine I replaced the relay and all 4 plugs to relay but still have a single click.

The only other things I have not checked as posted above are corroded cables. Am I missing anything?

Sorry if this needs to be a new post but it just seems like same problem. I have an '80 GL1100.
