slow cranking

Post by PapaTater » Sat Feb 02, 2013 5:22 pm

Hello everyone. Newb to the forums but have learned alot from reading your great posts. My issue is that my '81 GL1100 will crank one time then click. I have a brand new starter and a strong battery on it. At first i thought it may be vapor locked so I took the plugsout and cranked it a few times. Nothing came out but it did turn over several times with no issues. I put the plugs back in to give it another shot and same thing, crank once and clicks. Any suggestions on where to start trouble shooting? Your great knowledge and experience is greatly appreciated.

I speculate that if it cranks with the plugs out(light load)and just a little with the plugs in(full load),you have just 4 possibilities.
Loss of enough power to operate the starter(measure the battery volts while cranking)
Loss of power to the starter from corroded cables(clean the ground lug too)
Loss of power to the starter from the solenoid.when it quits, use a screwdriver and short the solenoid lugs.
Or,and I know it's "new",the starter just isn't holding up under the strain.
