Adding cruise control to a 1983 aspencade

Postby Chazms1758 » Sat Feb 02, 2013 7:20 pm

Question, can a cruise control system be added to the 1983 gold wing aspencade? If so, is there a particular brand or will I be looking for parts and pieces to make a system work for this bike? What parts go into making this system function and how do I go about installing such a system? Chazms1758

Anything's possible. I know there's a couple different systems that people install into Pacific Coasts, and I've heard of people installing them into 1100's - but I don't recall the name of them. You need one or two vacuum reservoirs, with check valves in order for the system to have enough vacuum capacity to operate the actuator.

I don't remember whether it was over at CGW or NGW, but there was a detailed how-to (with pics) on installation of an electronic cruise control. The end result seemed to be be pretty sweet.

To Wingadmin and NKYWinger thank-you for your replies to my posting. I'm somewhat familiar with both the vacuum and electronic systems you both mentioned. I think I will try and pursue the electronic method first seeing how vacuum systems over time can be prone to leakage. I'm sorry NKYWinger as the acronym's in your reply don't ring a bell with me, can you be more specific. Being an ole Mud Duck, you deep water sailors have a lingo all your own, help! Also if there is anything reliable out there in my research I will be performing the install on my own bike and forward those procedures to any members interested in a cruise control system of their own. Thanks again for all your help. :D :D

classicgoldwings.com and the other is ngwclub.com
Sorry for any confusion; many of us are members of all the sites, so I assume too much at times.

Keep us posted; I've thought about this on more than one occasion...

When I bought my 1983 GL1100a it had a cruise control attached to the handle bar. Unfortunately it never worked and when I was tracing the wires to see what was going on I found it was not connected to anything.

I'd love to figure out where/how to reconnect this and get it working if anyone has any experience with this sort of unit.

To NKYWinger, thanks John as this is the first and only gold wing site I have visited or found I was not privy to the other sites you acknowledged. Actually this is the first wing I've ever owned and just recently made my purchase before X-mas. I'm coming from a string of various BMW's and have always wanted a goldwing but couldn't afford one. I stumbled across my wing on Craig's list one day, turned out to be a heck of a find - a low mileage unit dirt cheap in excellent condition and no rust! So here I am wanting to make some modern modifications to bring my wing into the 21st century! The article about addressing the alternator issue was right up my alley and I thought while I was at it I would address some others such as the cruise control mod., the alternator, and up dating the communications system from the original since the bike only came with the am/fm stereo. For instance, like going to a bluetooth wireless for the intercom and using our I-phone to substitute for the CB and to use the phone for my navigation, although I'm a diehard map reader - always have been. I'm very blessed to have a life long partner, my wife who enjoys riding pillion, she insisted the comm's be brought up to date. So here I am delving into the world of wings, taking the opportunity this winter to get my ride ready for the spring, hating all this snow because I can't ride yet!

That looks like the Audiovox I have in my cage. I'll see if I have the instructions at home. It works great. Its just a universal cruise control. Try this site.>>>>>>>>http://www.miata.net/garage/MiataCCS100.htm<<<<<<<<

Howard-
My first Wing as well! I spent last winter doing what you're doing this winter...
Lots of good illustrated how-to's here ( :D Thanks, ADMIN! :D ) Consider adding Progressive springs while you have the shocks apart - no one has anything but good to say about the upgrade...
Also - consider joining your local GWRRA chapter...good folks that like to ride :)

Years ago,Markland made a cruise control set up for the 1100"s. I t was a universal cruise unit like the ones you used to buy at Sears in the day. Wasnt anything real special about the kit, maybe a couple of brackets to mount it to the bike. I may have the instructions here. If so I could E-mail you a copy of them if you like...Just have to find them.

First up, NKYWinger - John, thanks for the info on the progressive springs, as a matter of fact my front shocks need replacing and was wondering about the aftermarket springs while I am rebuilding the front end - that info is a big help. Next vtxcandyred your info about the aftermarket miata cruise control unit is most helpful, I'm going to do more investigating about this unit and how I might be able to adapt it to the gold wing - thanks  , and lastly alwing17, here's my e-mail address: chazms@rocketmail.com , I would be very interested in seeing any info you may have regarding the Markland cruise control system, while no longer available the info will be invaluable in helping me to modify and adapt a system to the wing. Everyone's contribution has been fantastic and I would like to thank everyone for their contribution.
I will keep everyone abreast of the system I finally install on my wing, being sure to document it's installation and photos so that anyone else considering this option for their bike's will have a guide to help them along. So for now I've got some homework to keep me busy, thanks again :D
