New Delima

Postby PapaTater » Tue Feb 05, 2013 3:10 pm

I finally got the ol' 81 GL1100 to crank but now the new problem is that it wouldn't start so I squirted a little gas in carb to see if it fired it did but does not run unless I turn the throttle up full. Now the big issue, while it is barely able to run doing that I have gas pouring out the right tailpipe. As I have it at full throttle I can see gas squirting from the right side to the left side. Once I quit turning the throttle it dies. I know this is probably multiple problems and one more than likely being the fuel pump but what else is it that would cause the gas to pour from the tailpipe when its running?

The engine is flooding, causing gas to get pushed out the exhaust valves. Stuck needle valve in one (or more) of your carbs?

Also, the other problem you describe - clogged slow jets. For sure. They are removable in the 80-81 models, but it's real tricky. Basically they are pressed-in inside these tubes so that you can't grip them from the outside for removal. You end up having to use bolt extractors.... yada yada just read up on it.

Either way, sounds like you're about to pull your carbs for a complete overhaul. Good luck!

I think Tugboat hit it.. Your carbs need a good clean. Sounds like the float valves are sticking and flooding the cylinder... A good excuse to get to know your bike a bit more intimately!!

So how difficult is it rebuild the carbs? Or should I just try taking it apart and give it a good soaking and cleaning instead?

Papa, sounds like its been sitting awhile, like the others said, stuck floats. I cured mine by overhauling all 4. quite a chore, i dont do it with beer near by, again, I'm not that great. Can start with seafoam, see what happens. but your in for a chore
good luck

Well, I guess I will get the calculator out to see how long I have go without beer to pay for the rebuild kit. Wonder how many honey-do's I will have to do before I can tell the wife I am spending more on the bike than her

Is Randakks the recommended kit or is there another one that would be sufficient for my needs?

Well, randakks is the best kit for new rubber..but you may need new float needles which are not in his kit and only OEM are recommended??? you could try opening up the carbs pulling all the jets clean them, reset the floats and reinstall and bench test for leaks if none reinstall on the bike..if leaks see from where..float needle seats(which could be the needles, the floats setting or the seats), carb to plenum o rings , plenum gasket,

If you bench test you can see where the leak is from with the caps off..up the jets..float/needle issues: at teh carb to plenum seam o rings, the center line of the plenum plenum gasket,

Carbs must be level on the bench

like the pic..but the source should be 6' above the carbs for best test...
