1982 GL1100A engine smoking and fouling

Post by flagmania2005 » Mon Mar 29, 2010 2:48 am

I have a 1982 Aspencade that just started emitting whit smoke from the right exhaust. I checked the spark plugs and it seems to be the #3 that is wet with what seems to be the coolant. There doesn't seem to be any coolant in the oil, but it will start smoking after it has warmed up a bit and just gets worse and then starts to run rough. I just bought this bike awhile ago, and am not familiar with the fluid cooled motorcycle engines and am worried about the cost to repair this. I have checked at a few Honda dealers and they have all told me "GOOD LUCK" on finding parts or someone that will work on "The Old Dinosaurs"...........what can you tell me??

Pull all the plugs out and have a look. If it is the #3 plug that is burning coolant, it will have a "steam cleaned" look to it. If that's the case, more than likely you've got a leaky head gasket. It's not a horrible thing to do, and any decent bike shop should be able to do it for you, if you don't want to attempt it yourself.
