removing false tank door

Postby Wilcoy02 » Wed Feb 13, 2013 3:29 pm

I want to paint my false tank.

What is the secret of getting the bigger door off the shell?

I took the screws out and the springs. But I can not get the door hinge past the rivited metal piece.
I do not do rivets so I do not want to tear them out.
I took the bolts out from the braces across the entire tank.
I got the little gas door off but please tell me how to get the big door off the shell.

Thank You

It is REALLY not easy. I don't remember what I did when I did it, but it involved messing around with the complicated way they have the springs set up, undoing those springs, and (I think) partially separating the tank halves. Getting it back together was even more difficult, getting the thing aligned, getting the springs installed and sprung correctly - took AGES and a lot of effort, lots of trial and error.

Are you sure you want to take it off, instead of just masking the mechanisms?

Wilcoy, you have to fudge with it alot like he said and it will come out..Push in I think and twist and take note of how it comes out as it will go it the same way..You will get it but don't get mad at it..Just mess with it until it comes out..I did it 4 times and still have fun with it..don't forget how the springs came out either... This is truely a test I swear...Now tell us you passed it..

I just hope it goes on easier than taking it off. Those little caps -- One was on the table and I sazz where did that come from??? I saw where it went so I know to be careful with them little critters.
It will be about 2 weeks till they go back on as the painting is going slowly. sand paint sand paint sand etc...

Hope I remember how to put it back together.

Anytime I am taking stuff apart that is a bit complex, I take pictures as I go. It has saved me more than a few times.
