83 1100 Engine Loads up in 4th and O.D.

Postby Kyle 83 » Wed Feb 13, 2013 7:51 pm

Attempting to bring this old bike back to life. It has sat for a long time. New fuel pump, carbs have been done twice in the past two months, once by me and once by a real motorcycle mech. Engine runs great, however when I shift to 4th or O.D. without rediculously high R.P.M.'s the engine loads up with fuel and acceleration goes to a minimum. In the lower gears acceleration is perfect and everything sounds and feels perfect. Could use some help figuring this one out. Thanks

At what speeds or Rpm are you shifting to 4th and 5th? These motors love to Rev right up to redline, Is your vaccum advance free to move? Is the advance hooked up to carb #3? 8-)

4th loads up if I throttle it hard in the 50 mph range. 5th really falls on its face all the way to 70 mph.
Nearly impossible to pass anyone in 5th. I will have to study the advance but am relatively positive the mech. who did my carbs would have it correct. Veteran mechanic. The advance is probably the next thing to look at though.

Wow, that's a good one, very uncommon issue, it runs well in the lower gears but 4th and 5th the bike loses power, I would start with everything electrical, Wires, plugs, PG [pulse Generator] Coil, grounds, every freaking thing....Maybe a compression test... usually it acts up all the time even thru the lower gears...That's so odd...Have them check your timing marks...You gotta let everyone know what it was man ok PLEASE.... :D

I don't know...to me, it sounds like fuel starvation. When you are under load in 4th and above, you're pulling a lot more power from the engine, which requires more gas. Not enough gas, the engine starts to starve.

After what WingAdmin has just said I went back and read the OP. If the bike has sat for a long time the gas tank could be rusty or the pick up screens could be plugged with crud. Check the bottom of the tank and the fuel filter for rust clogging things up. you may want to pull a float bowl or two as well to see whats in the bottom of them 8-)

I fully agree with ya Road and Wing. Had the exact same issues with mine when I got it. Mine had sat for seven years. Cruised perfect around town but was an absolute dog on open road. After derusting my tank using the electrolis procedure and changing or cleaning every screen and choke point in fuel system I have never had any power issues. Please let us know what ya find out. :D
