centre stand

Postby petarm1 » Mon Feb 18, 2013 10:12 am

good day everyone. i was looking over the wifes new 1980 interstate and i found that the centre on her bike was a bit hard to use. on closer inspection
i noticed that it has been twisted and that rust has started to be built up in the tube. on reading other sections in this forum it seems that this is a popular problem.
my question is what is the best way to repair this. and do i need to dissassemble the whole bike to do it. and if left alone does it affect the frame stucture since i know she will never use the centre stand.
if needed i have a 79 gl1000 that i could cut out the centre stand and use it. i also see that on both my older bikes the side stands have been repaired a few time.
is there other areas i should be inspecting for some weld repairs
thanks petar

Hello Petar. Have a look at this thread viewtopic.php?f=11&t=52 and it may help give you an idea of maintance for them. Also, could you show us on the following photo what part is twisted? The center stand can come off with removal of the left side exhaust pipe. Not a real problem. But you can lube it without removal. And may even be able to repair the twist while on the bike. I've color coded the pic and just tell us which color/colors are twisted. I am curious, and wondering how that could possibly twist. Looking at the frame parts list, I do not think that it will affect the frame structure if left alone, but I would fix it.

You might want to lay it on it's side on the crash bars on a rug(you won't hurt it) and really inspect down there for rust. The frame is very suspect too so get a good light and start poking around.

Mine was probably not as corroded as yours but you may be interested in what I did.

i am assuming that the previous owner had it on the centre stand when doing something. it has a crack next to where the weld joins the cross bar to the main frame that the stand is connected to. i will post a picture this weekend when i get the bike back on the lift
thanks petar
