Radiator fan stopped working ..

Postby oreng » Wed Feb 20, 2013 12:46 pm

Hi,
Today I was in some traffic jam and noticed that the fan didn’t kicked in , almost hit the red gage side so I stopped for few minutes.

Came home and added some anti-freeze fluid that was missing , still no change as the fan didn’t start after the engine was hot .

I have shorten the unit connector and the fan worked .

As its timely & expansive shipment , is it for sure the switch ?
Any recommendation for replacement ?
I need to the radiator off to replace ?

Thanks so much for any info .

Oren

The temperature switch has 2 contacts..One goes to ground and the other to the fan.Shorting the wire to ground will turn on the fan.If this dosen't happen when the bike gets hot,the switch IS bad.
You must drain the antifreeze to remove it.
I found it easiest to remove the radiator for acess.
You can replace it with another switch as long as it has the same temperature rating and mounting size.
I've heard that some car switches work fine.
Some only have one electrical terminal so you would only need to hook it to the fan wire, the green ground wire isn't needed.

can also test it the hard way, remove radiator and run test leads from battery to fan connector. if fan runs, it's the switch or the wiring.

If you shorted across the switch and the fan worked then it is a defective switch. Caution.... There are people selling aftermarket switches that don't meet the temperature range specified for the Goldwing. Saber Cycle is an example as well as some on E-bay.

as a temporary fix until you get a new switch, wire a toggel switch to the wires from the bad one, when temp. gauge gets to just above normal operation turn it on until it goes back to normal. once you get the new one replace the bad one, this will allow you to ride until then. Bob
