Mysterious part found in Carb...I need an adult!!

Postby SteveB123 » Mon Feb 25, 2013 8:09 pm

Figures, of course, that the last carb to come apart (#3) would be problematic.

Popped out the needle jet, and found...well, I don't know. Sorry for the crap pic, never could figure out closeups.

Brass, cylindrical, ~1mm diameter, "barbed" end, hollow but closed on one end. IN the needle jet! Needle is fine, all other brass bit accounted for and not missed any bits. Just checked the needle against one of the others, identical length, no "tip" broken off or anything.

What the heck is going on?

Some previous "wrench" break off a tool trying to retrieve the jet? Makes me wonder what the mixture map was for that cylinder.
Man, this bike'll run like a top now.

There. Used a real camera, rather than a damn phone. Car key in background for scale.

You said it was in Carb #3 right, I wonder if it's a plug that was put in the hose to block the vacuum advance, is it possible it could have made it up into the jet??? I have read of guys blocking the advance by using some sorta plugs...I don't know man I'm guessing... :D I think your bike will run much better now...You may want to test your vaccum advance ..

it appears to be a check valve plunger. the hollow portion is where a spring would have been and the conic is where it would have sealed in a port. and since it was found in the #3 carb it could be part of the accelerator pump. something to double check. (no pun intended)

one more thought, you say it is closed on the point end. could it be a ball closing it? i was leaving a note for the wife. i was using a ball point pen to write the note and the tip looks very much like your part. dont know how it got in there but if that is what it is from and it is no longer in the carb then things are good!

Hmm. Interesting. I'll poke around, but everything seems in place for the accel pump.
Of course that means I'm possibly missing a spring as well!

I can't recall which way I had to push it out (needle or bowl). It certainly wouldn't pass through the main jet.

LOL.
Hey, wait a minute. I drifted them out with a pen! Maybe the last idiot working on these was me.
I'll check my "composite barrel, brass tipped" jet drift for damage when I get home.

Nevermind. The "check valve" writes in blue ink!

Well, that's better. Back to our regular programming.
