'82 GL1100 Interstate, carb problem

Post by firedude » Mon Mar 04, 2013 11:40 pm

While riding my '82 Goldwing at about 75mph, I heard a "pop" like a backfire only not as loud. I lost power and the bike slowed to 65 - 70 without me backing off on the throttle. I backed off a little and the bike was running smooth, but when I advanced the throttle it had a hesitation and ran like it was flooding out. I slowed down to 40 mph and rode a few miles running good, then I was able to throttle up and it ran great and I made it home. I replaced plugs, air and fuel filters and drained the gas and put in fresh 92 Octane when I got home. It ran great the next time I rode it a week later. I have tried to ride it once since that time and it still has a loss of power and and stalls when I throttle up. I'm pretty sure it's in the carbs, can anyone tell me what kind of repair bill I am looking at (if this is the problem) or what else should I look at. thanks for the help.

Had my carbs done along with a new fuel pump, and a couple other trivial things.$700 at the Honda shop. Sorry I can't help you with a repair solution, Going through similar problems with an 83. I have enough $ wrapped up in this old bike that I could have purchased a newer nicer one. Maybe thats not what it's about though.

Could be a few things.

Stuck needle sliders, giving a lean mixture under load.....hence the "pop".
Weak coils/wires/wire ends...giving out under under increased cylinder pressure loading when you crack the throttle.

Do you know how old the timing belts are? It sounds like it might have skipped time by one or two cogs, just a thought. Another thought would be the pulse coils.

Looking back on it now i wish i would have waited until i had more money to purchase a newer one. when i bought the bike 3 yrs ago, the owner said he had replaced the timing belt that year (i've only put 4,000 miles on it since i bought it and it's at 47,000 miles now. thanks for all the great ideas, i just have to follow up with some of those. Maybe i'll start with the carbs, then move on to the coils, wires, etc. happy riding.
