Lighting help please?

Postby Slabghost » Fri Apr 02, 2010 5:56 pm

I just bought my 80 1100 and in loading it inadvertantly pinched the fairing harness between the fork and stop. This fried about 6 wires. I cut out all the damaged wiring I could see and spliced in new. Now all I have are the front running lights. No turn signals and no headlight. Is there a main ground somewhere that could be fried or a relay? What am I missing. I checked all the fuses 3 times.rechecked all the splices to be sure I hadn't crosswired anything. This is driving me nuts.

I had a quick look at the schematic, and I don't see anything obviously shared between those circuits. Do you have the rear taillight running light? What about rear turn signals?

Do you know which wires you had to splice and repair?

I have an electrical issue on my '82 as well. No tail lights, dash/instrument lights and the front brake doesn't trigger the brake light . Just discovered this tonight and haven't had time to troubleshoot yet.

Got all mine straightened out. Fuse for tail/instrument lights shorting out from the lead to the light bar I removed grounding to the frame. Blade connector to the front brake lever was loose. Damn, I hope everything turns out this easy

Check the fuse.
This happened to me. I think the fuses on mine have been there a while and quit just because of age.

Yep, those old glass fuses, the adhesive that holds the metal to the glass just dries out and cracks away, and the fuses either fail outright, or become intermittent. It's a good idea to refresh them, if you don't know just how old they are.

I got the headlight and signals to work if wired directly to the wiring in the headlight bucket. Rear light worked as well. Connected the fairing harness with repaired black, blue, purple, red, and green wires to like colors in the bucket and I have no lights. I have no connectors on the red and green wires. There wasn't any when I got it. I have a complete fsm but unfortunately it's on microfiche and so far I have no reader. Anyone know where I can get it put on cd in readable format?

Ok I got all the lights working and the fairing reinstalled. The only minor issue left light wise is the left signal indicator stays on until I actuate either signal. Now I need to find a foolproof way to bleed the front brakes.

As for the brakes-what year is your bike? My new friend is the Mityvac-but my bile is an 83 and the bleeder nipples were clogged so I had to clean them out first.

I agree - the Mity Vac is one of the best things I ever bought - it almost makes bleeding brakes enjoyable!
