GL1100 went 'DEAD'

Postby mtn_boy1 » Thu Mar 07, 2013 10:17 pm

My little brother, who now has my 83 Aspy, says he went to start it and the battery was weak. Said it turned over slowly but wouldn't start. He charged the battery for a coupla days and tried to start it again. The radio and courtesy light came on but nothing else. No headlight, marker lights, dash, nothing. He checked the dogbone, tapped on the starter (in case it had stuck), wiggled the ignition, tapped lightly on the starter button housing. Any ideas guys? I'm wondering about the ignition switch. What else could just go like that? Any help would be appreciated.

how old is the battery? have him take it somewhere to load test it. dogbone may look good when it's not.

Forgive me for hijacking but same happened to me this weekend. 6 month old batt, turn the key, voltmeter reads 12, analog clock works, radio works, no headlight though. Hit the starter and nothing happens except that all dies, until I turn ignition off then back on. Vicious cycle. I feel your frustration

ok gr8 and mtn, lets try this: make sure batt is fully charged. disconnect neg battery cable ( temp for safety). disconnect cable at starter. make sure it doesn't touch anything. reconnect neg cable to battery. turn key on. using a screwdriver or similar insulated tool, jump the lugs on the solenoid. if all lights stay on then its in the starter. if you loose lights again we'll have to look deeper. it may be a bad connection somewhere, just have to find out where.

I would Start at the left and work to the right....remove and clean the ground connection at the frame, rule that out, check main wires to battery for crud, replace if crud is present or clean well, buy a new battery or charge it well, clean connection at starter and at the solenoid...check 3 yellow wire connection at stator and repair..
