valve adjustment

Postby trashtruck » Sat Mar 09, 2013 2:23 pm

hey all. so i went and adjusted valves this am on my 82 interstate. followed the instructions in manual and diy article here. i beleive it's right but ended up with valve "tick" that wasn't present before. i know valves are supposed to make some noise so my question is how much noise is too much? i did notice when i started, #1 intake was a little tight.

It's hard to describe..
My wife can't hear it at all.I hear them equally from all around the bike.
Now with a full helmet at 30 mph I'd have to strain to hear them at all.
A half helmet at 30 mph I can hear them but there kinda in the background.
Loud like a screwdriver tapping on the crash bar isn't normal

ok, thanks. mine aren't that loud so i guess it's normal. i'm betting that #1 was over adjusted so wasn't making any noise and now that it's right it does. i didn't see any bad or broken springs or anything so mabey i just gotta ride it some. can't wait.

Ha ha ha you know things are right then,,,the adjustments make all the difference in the World, it doesn't hurt to check and then recheck and never get the two filler gauges confused, my favorite thing is to wear cotton balls in my ears under my helmet then go ride...I love the way the bike sounds going through the gears, makes me smile :D ...Awesome sound...harley guys love their sound I love mine..And I just don't think I could live my life without it..

The valve adjustment really does make a huge difference, both in performance and smoothness.

what is the point of the cotton balls in my ear.... Aaauhhh I place them in my ears because it really really reduces the windnoise sound going down the Highway, You can actually still here your tunes too but the wind noise is why I wear them,,,And they are cheap...I always seem to lose the ear plugs I get....I never ride on a long trip without them... :D But this is about valve adjustments so we best get back on that subject...I adjust mine just where the openings are almost tight but not quite on the feeler gauge... it drags but not loosely.. :D
