these bikes are known to have the valve seals dry out and crack. do a compression test. check coolant level, oil level. let us know how you made out.
WHAT IS THE SPEED OF DARK?

Could be one of a lot of things...or multiple:
Carb issues allowing rich running, washing oil off the cylinders.
Shot valve oil seals.
Shot rings.

Remember, your bike was built when Joe Clark was Prime Minister, and Jimmy Carter was President! It's been a very long time.

I'm thinking a gas problem along with some oil in the cylinders. It smokes out both sides the right also has some popping. i don't think the carbs are set right i think there too rich.

Honestly, the carbs are probably filthy inside. I saw "carb cleaner" on your list. Hmm.
Pouring a can of cleaner into the tank won't clean the multitude of air and vacuum passages in the carbs that control the fuel mixture.
Of course, we all wish it did!

This was a major help for me; frankly it was better than Howards book. Randakk's kit IS the way to go, though.

When I started:

When I finished: :D

Every passage and metering device verified clear. New soft parts. Vacuum sliders move like silk.
Re-installation was today.

It doesn't smoke at all when it gets warm? Seems like something is expanding and not letting the oil into the cylinder, once it gets hot. Sounds from that, like it could be the rings. Have you ever run Seafoam through the carbs yet? Do you ALWAYS shut off the gas? Center stand or not, always shut off the gas valve.

Can you take a pic of the smoke and post it? It may not help us diagnose anything for you, we just like pictures. :D

Only smokes during warm up with choke on.Once it's warmed up choke off no more smoke runs fine revs with no smoke. Always keep it on centre stand with the gas off always run it it awhile before shut off.If it was rings would't it smoke all the time? Odd

It seems like it would smoke all the time if it were the rings. Maybe slightly worn rings heat up after she gets hot enough, and the rings expand to prohibit the oil from passing them. That's just a theory I have that went through my noggin. My rings are worn in my noggin. ;) But just MAYBE the petcock, although it is in the off position, is still letting some gas by. That is a simple test. Get a coffee can, pull the line from the petcock, and see it it is leaking in the off position. :?: Just thinking what I would do.

What color is the smoke? Or, for our Canadian friends that are going to beat us in the World Baseball Classic tonight at 9, what colour is the smoke? ;)
