Everybody has an opinion on what is the best, I happen to really like the Avon VenomX ,AM41 and AM42. They have nice light neutral handling, good wet weather grip and reasonably long tread life. They have the weight rating you want for the Wing. I put 3 sets of them on my 1100 over the years and just finished mounting one up front on my 1500. I ride hard and long, in all types of weather so a good tire is very important to me.
Others will chime in here with their choices. 8-)

I would highly recommend the Avon Venoms then for you. Superior grip and stability, and actually quite good wear as well. I've never been more satisfied with a tire, so much so that I put them on my 1500 as well.

The Dunlop 404 series is a good all around tire. And resonably priced. Regards, Johnyy

I tried finding the Venoms for my 81 but I couldn't but I'm sure they have them for the 83 in a set...I really wanted them too, I got the bridgestone's Spitfires instead,, very pleased with them...Smooth ride..with dyna beads installed...Made a believer out of me...

So what size AVONS did you go with.
I currently have Dunlops that need replacing. MR90-18 17H up front and MU90B-16 78H out back.
Translates to 120/90-18 Front and 140/90-16 Rear.
What will fit out back width wise or front if the exact size is not available?
Also what size won't screw up my speedo reading if the front is different. A few things to consider I guess.

I second this. I have used the Vemon and Super Vemons in the past on my touring bikes. I using the Dunlop E3's now and have been enjoying them. And as many here will tell you - put Dynabeads in whatever tire you deside on.

The Dunlop 404 will take care of your needs-without the added (and unrealistic) expeneses of venon tires.Just my 2 cents worth. Regards, Johnyy

I haven't used the Super Venoms since my friend owned a bike shop... so I have a out-dated and "not retail" idea of the cost. Are they that much more than Dunlops or Firestones?

Keep in mind that the 404 is a cruser tire, if you're doing a lot of highway traveling you will do better with the E-3 or the Avon's, I had a set of 404's and was very unpleased with them...Front was fine but the rear one cupped, and when it comes to bablancing them I am a perfectionist and they were still in balance and they still cupped..I was using them for long hauls..Not crusing.. Don't take my word for it , just read some of the reviews on that tire..

I have had Dunlops ,but was not real pleased with them. Went to the Bridgestone Spitfire and I am very pleased with it. ( rear , front not needed yet ) Highly suggest using Dynabeads for balancing them.

With all these opinions on tires I am wondering why there is not a sticky on this with brands tried, tested and actual data to back up all the conversations. Some guys just do long distance, some a mix, some commuting to and from work. Not sure how many people use their GWs for bombing around town but I am sure there are a few. I'll be making a wild as guess based on what I read all over.

Because opinions aren't data, and opinions are all you'll get.
"User data" is more variables than anything else, mine included.

By data I mean, how long they lasted and what type of riding you did to get that mileage. That's about all anyone could hope to get.

i commute 120 miles a day on mine and had a catastrophic failure with my rear tire last summer. With no warning the side wall zippered open at 65 mph. I can say the ride pretty much sucked after that. It was a Dunlop, one year old with a little over 10,000 miles on it. Ride and grip was perfect until that moment. So two lessons I take from is throw tire away at 10,000 and avoid dunlop. And like everyone else here, just my opinion and experience. HAPPY RIDING! :D

For the guys who bought the Avon Venom X, what was the actual size of the tire you bought? There does not seem to be a 140/90-16 available.
I'm going to go check clearances at lunch to see how much room I have on either side if I go with a wider tire. 150/80-16 and MT90B-16 M/C 74H.
Supposedly a MU85B-16 is a direct cross but no tire is actually shown in that size for the Venoms.

Avon makes a 140/90-16. That is the size that is on my 1100 Aspy and has been for the last 3 sets of tires. Ask your dealer to look a little harder for you. 8-)

Can't understand why AVON didn't have it on their page?!?!?
Tires are on order now. :)
