Peel the rubber boot between the engine and the swinging arm off the swinging arm to reveal the universal joint. Inside the joint is a circlip; not the easiest thing to remove! But it has to come off!
With that removed the drive shaft should be able to slide back into the swinging arm enough to clear the engine output shaft. I am not totally sure of that on the 1100 but I think so. if not, the rear wheel and the final drive will need to be removed.

On the 1000, there is ONE position of the shaft in which it will slide back just enough without doing all the removals. You have to keep trying it as you move the shaft round.

'Impossible' is just a level of difficulty! The only stupid question is the one you didn't ask first!

I had my 1981 gl1100 engine out this winter. As stated that is the way to get it out. I had to remove the timing chain covers to allow enough room to clear the frame. Getting it out was easy but getting it back in was a bear. Maybe because I was in a 10X16 shed with a portable heater. LOL!! Check out the picture. The parts on the seat are from the number 3 cylinder compliments of the PO. Also check out the finished product. Nothing left undone.
