Use RTV on new valve cover gaskets?

Postby DetroitWingnut » Mon Apr 01, 2013 6:18 am

The old valve cover gaskets on my 1980 GL1100 are leaking, and I have ordered new OEM gaskets from Cyclemax. After I remove valve covers and do valve clearance adjustments (as needed), I'm wondering whether I should use some black RTV on gaskets before reassembling? I know this would likely fix any oil leaks before they even started; what are the cons to my rational? What do other Goldwing owners think?

Many many years ago,my (brother) used Rtv silicone on valve cover. It beaded up on the inside, came loose and entered the oil passage.
The owner got 38 miles before the engine locked up.
So I have had very little use for rtv silicone on a engine.
Oil leaks are fixed by repairing any mating surface damage and using a new gasket.

Thanks, Virgilmobile! I was looking at the small picture; wondering for instance whether $30 worth of gaskets would be re-usable down the road when I removed valve covers again...didn't cross my mind that RTV might end up causing more trouble than it fixed!

The valve cover gaskets are "rubber" and can be re-used.
That is until they break or harden and leak at which time they are replaced.
I've had my 83 covers off and on a dozen times over the years with no problems.
Don't discount the bolt seal either.
