Best place to wire in brake light

Postby tunaboy » Mon Apr 01, 2013 11:05 am

I have a very stock 1100 standard. I want to wire in a second LED brake light. Where do I tap in and what type of connection should I use? I want a nice clean installation that doesn't look like a 10 year old did it.

I have a dealer installed type and they just tapped into the brake light wire on the harness. They used one of those Scotlok`s like these ... QgodImwA-A

I hate those "vampire clips." I tapped mine into the brake line, but I cut, soldered and heat-shrinked my connections, as I do for all of my connections. If heat-shrink tubing won't work, I will wrap them in electrical tape, then put a nylon wire tie around the electrical tape so that it won't unwind when the adhesive gets gooey in the heat of summer.

Like WingAdmin, I solder every electrical connection and use shrink tubing. Electrical "connectors" are just asking for trouble. I have had numerous connectors fail me in various ways before I learned my lesson(s). I also run any wiring in some sort of "conduit" when possible for obvious reasons. You can't be too careful where DC voltage is concerned.
