I have a 1980 GL1100. I was taking it home the other day, and after driving it about a little over an hour, I started to lose power. I would have the throttle completely down, and the bike would only travel about 30 M.P.H. Then, just like nothing, it would get back going, and I would be going about 70, but it would not want to accelerate at all. So, I pulled over to the side of the road, and monkeyed around with some stuff. I suspected maybe some loose wires from the boots, so I made sure the all the wires were in good. I then got back on the road, and the bike ran good for about 20 minutes, and then the same stuff happened again. I then decided to change the plugs out. When I pulled out the plugs, two of them were pretty black and sooty, and they had only been in the bike for about two hundred miles. But I put in four new plugs, and then the bike ran good the rest of the way home. Does anybody have any thoughts on what is causing this? Right now I am thinking that it may be an ignition coil. The two plugs that were bad were from the same igntition coil, and the fact that when I stopped for about a while to mess around with the wires, the coil was given the chance to cool down a little bit, so then they worked for about 20 minutes when I got back on the road. Just wondering if anybody has had similiar problems. Thanks.

All I can suggest is swapping the coils around. If the problem follows then a replacement coil is likely to be in order.

i think i might be having a similar situation. the plugs for #1 & #2 pistons were all oily, while 3&4 looked like they were firing clean. wasn't sure how to do it, but switched wires at the coil to see if any difference. it had been blowing black smoke out the right side (this is one of the reasons i was searching), but after switching the smoke went away, so i thought 'maybe 1&2 aren't getting any spark'. also, it didn't seem to idle after the switch, so my thought there was that carb #3 controlled the idle & now it wasn't getting spark to maintain the idle. anyone know how to test a coil? or is there anything else it might be?
