Postby guardsman » Sat Jun 13, 2009 12:41 am

Hi,

I just bought a 1983 Honda goldwing GL1100 runs great but the instrument lights don't work the gauges work fine just no lights also the radio dosen't work. could it be the radio itself? or something else.

thanks

My guess would be that they are two separate problems, as they are two different circuits on two different fuses. The radio fuses are inside the fairing, behind the left hand turn signal - there are a LOT of them in there (7 or 8, if I remember correctly).

If ALL the gauge lights are out, I'd start looking at fuses there, too. Have you downloaded an electrical schematic for the bike yet?

Yes, just click at the top of the page where it says "View Goldwing Manuals here".

You remove the left front turn signal from the fairing (pull it out and let it hang by the wires). In behind it you will find a rat's nest of disorganized wiring, and in amongst that mess you will find six or seven inline fuses - white plastic containers on the wires, that when opened, contain the fuses.

It's possible...but did you just check the fuses visually, or did you actually test them? The old glass fuses can dry out and fail while looking perfectly fine. I generally turn the bike to ACC, then use a multimeter to test both sides of each fuse, making sure there is 12 volts on both sides.
