Taking the Emblems off an 81 GL1100

Postby sagh » Wed Apr 10, 2013 6:30 pm

Hi Everyone, I've taken the panels, fenders and fuel tank off my bike and I'm going to give it a fresh coat of paint. This may be a silly question but, amma gonna ask...Is there a special tool to get those metal clips that hold the emblems to the panels, fuel tank and front fender. I would appreciate any help please.

Thanks,

Paul

I dont know of any, I just lifted the edges a bit, enough to get a hold of it and twisted it off like a nut, putting it back on you just push it till it`s snug.

Just as calzone said, just "Worry" them off with a small screwdriver or such tool. Are you repainting the emblems? Regards, Johnyy

Hey, thanks for the help my friends. I took a small flat head screw driver and curved the end so that it would fit underneath the four slots and bent them up one at a time and the clips came off very easily. Thanks again for all the help.

HI JOHNNY SMOKE. I HAVE THE SAME VETTER TOURING PACK AS YOU. WHAT I DID WITH THE EMBLEMS WAS... SPRAYED THEM BLACK.WITH FUSION PLASTIC PAINT. THEN HEATED THE PAINTED FLAT,TOPS UP A LITTLE WITH MY DREMEL/BUFFING WHEEL,THEN WIPED THEM CLEAN WITH DENATURED ALCOHOL.TURNED OUT PRETTY GOOD. THE FAIRING IS NEXT. THEN THE PIN STRIPING ON ALL OF THEM.I'D LIKE TO CHANGE THE TRUNK TO THE NEWER STYLE. AS LONG AS MY FULL FACE HELMET WILL FIT IN IT. I CARRY BOTH (SHORTY BRAIN BUCKET) AT ALL TIMES. NOW AND THEN I ACTUALLY WEAR THEM. WE DON'T HAVE TO IN FLORIDA.THANKS FOR THE TIP THOUGH....BEN

painting them makes them look so much better. Be patient let the black dry throughly before doing the next color. I used a brush called MICROBRUSH SIZE: SUPERFINE
Made getting into the little places a lot easier. Got it at Hobby Lobby craft store.

Beav,Thank you for the kind words.
I painted the centers that shade of blue because after taking a second ( part time) job feeding calves on a dairy farm (there are MANY dairy farms here in se mn-farmers are begging for good help) I saved enough money to have my bike painted!
I plan on painting the false tank a matching shade of blue as well as the side covers. The rest of the bike will be gloss black-with a few coats of clear.
I also bought progressive 412 shocks for the rear and new steal brake lines. And randacks carb kit.
After working on this bike for almost two years,it will be rather exciting to have it all painted and finished
Don't worry everybody-the bike is scheduled to be painted on may 24th-I will post a few pics cause I know you all love pics! Regards, Johnyy

Ha ha ha no disrespect man come on .....I would expect that slang from someone in the south but man you're so far north that it stunned me. ..I remember taking off those emblems for the first time, I was very careful not to break the post because I learned quickly how expensive replacement covers were  I'm Mr. cheap so I managed to get the little clips off without a mess on my hands...Welcome to the site by the way....You guy's up in Canada are pretty cool... :D Oh one of my favorite sayings around here is "Them There"...I try to use it in every sentence..

Wilcoy02 and Johnyy Fantastic job on those emblems fellas. I know how much time and patience it took to get them to look that good. And seeing fellow Wingers taking pride in what they do keeps me on the ball. Yes Johnnyy that blue really pops. Feels real nice when you put em on and see them shine too. And when other riders see em, they know Wingers take pride in their ride.

Thanks for the pics, I like pics. So here is one of my pics of behind my Goldwing workshop a few days ago after some rain. Not meaning to hijack the thread, there is a Wing in that shed with newly painted emblems on it. ;)
