BRAKE FLUID LEAKING ON MY GAS TANK

Postby BENJEE2112 » Sat Apr 13, 2013 11:01 am

WHY IN THE WORLD WOULD HONDA PUT WEEP SLOTS ON THE FLUID RESERVOIR LID? IT DESTROYED MY FALSE TANK PAINT. I'VE CHANGE THE GASKET. DID NOT OVERFILL IT. STILL DID IT. NOW THAT I RE-PAINTED THE TANK. I'M ONLY FILLING IT HALF WAY. WHEN IT'S ON THE SIDE STAND. LEVEL IS DIRECTLY OVER THE TANK. I'M AFRAID TO PULL DOWN THE FILLER RUBBERS INSIDE IT. BECAUSE IT WILL RAISE THE LEVEL AGAIN. DOES ANY OF THIS SOUND NORMAL? WILL PULLING DOWN,THE RUBBER EXPANDERS HELP? IDEAS WILL BE MOST APPRECIATED.....THANKS..BEN

The slot in the lid is to allow air into the top of the diaphragm. There should not be any fluid there. The diaphragm should seal on the lip.As your fluid drops so does the diaphragm and air enters the top to equalize.

Me either.mine leaked too.
I removed the top and fluid.stuffed it full of paper towels and used a good flat file and resurfaced where the diaphragm seats.it was pitted.it leaked there.now it dosen't.

I used just a file.it ended up very smooth,no gouges.light touch,it's aluminum.scraped the crusty off the cap too.lay the file completly across it so it files it flat.

OKAY. NOW I FEEL REAL DUMB. MY RESERVOIR IS PLASTIC. I THOUGHT YOU WAS TALKING ABOUT FILING THE TOP OF THE PLASTIC. I KNOW THE LID IS METAL.(ALUMINUM). AM I FILING THE LID OR THE PLASTIC. OR BOTH?
I'M SORRY FOR BUGGIN YOU

My bad.I thought it was aluminum.I had to do this on my 1200.
now I'm at a loss. Usually plastic units don't leak unless there microfractures or the lid is warped.
I suppose If the sealing lip is the cause,it too could be resurfaced .
For it,I'd remove it and turn it upside down on some 220 then 600 grit paper.A file may take too much off in a hurry.
