83 GL1100 questions??????

Postby foxhound0511 » Thu Apr 18, 2013 10:22 am

I have a 1983 gl1100. I got it for free because the previous owner was a dummy and timed the engine wrong and bent the two
exuast valves on the right hand head. the pistons have a little scrape no big deal ive seen worse and I can wet sand it .
Im a mechanic and I have the service manual so I have enough to get me by. But my question is to get new valves and a machine shop to press in new guides is about $500. I saw a gl1100A head on ebay for $99 in mint condition (I dont believe in mint condition.. ill go over the head with a fine tooth comb). But will the 82 gl1100A fit on a 83 gl1100?? and is it more cost effective to go with the used one?

if i'm not wrong, and sometimes i am, the big difference between the 82/83 was in the transmission. heads should still be the same.
WHAT IS THE SPEED OF DARK?

I looked at them online... they look identical.. I just wanted to make sure nothing was changed.

Correct, 80-83 heads are all the same. I would go with the used head after I took it apart and inspected it ,new valve seals and a light lapping. check out the how to articles for "resurfacing" the heads if they are less than perfect. 8-)
