INSURANCE FOR 1983 GOLDWING

Postby cromie » Thu Apr 18, 2013 11:22 am

I live in Ontario and have been told by my Insurance carrier that after this year they will not insure my bike as it is 30 years old. I have only had public liability on it but they claim it is their policy. Does anyone know a carrier that will insure it without it costing me an arm and a leg.

Got to an insurance broker, instead of the big insurance companies.

First time I've heard of a insurance company doing that.

RBC takes my insurance money every month, no problem.

what company is it,,,I can call them and rip them a new one if you wish... No I'm far to polite for that stuff..I thought Canadians were really nice folks,, from what I have seen they sure are...What's up with that policy.. ?? Are they trying to force a newer bike on you or something.?. Did they say Hey Cromie, you need a newer bike then we shall cover you...??? I say it's discrimination against oldness... If people retire at 65 years old, then doesn't a bike have a the same right...  Shoot it's only 30 years old.. Gosh darn it..

Cromie.
I used to have insurance with Jevco but they were bought out by Intact Insurance. I also have a 1983 Gl100i and it seems that not too many companies like to insure older bikes.
You will still have to pay an arm and a leg as I found that this year my rates jumped from $740 with Jevco to $1150 with Intact. I too am shopping around for a better rate at this time.
It's going to be tough to brake and shift gears without my limbs.

It does, if you judge where you live solely by the price of motorcycle insurance...without knowing what you're actually comparing!

I have full coverage (on my '83 Aspy) with State Farm; it was easy to get and was really inexpensive.

In Florida you don't even have to have insurance to get tags and registered. No I'm not joking....but it's Florida....remember the Bush vs. Gore election.
Most motorcycle problems are caused by the nut that connects the handlebars to the saddle :)

I'm paying about $87/yr on my '82 Interstate with Progressive. I got a $12/yr discount by taking the motorcycle safety course.

Wow! The last time I paid a low rate of $75 per year was back in 1964. Nothing but a steady rise in rates for those of us in Ontario.
I talked to an agent of CAA and he says he is paying over $5000 yearly for his bike. Mind you he is a lot younger and has one of those Ninja bikes.
I guess living in the greater metropolitan Toronto area is what drives the rates up. It's not if you will get hit, but when you will get hit by another motorist.

I heard somewhere that the rate thing with Jevco is about when your renewal was. Mine was in March so somehow I ended up with the Jevco rate and not the hyper inflated Intact rate.

If my rate of about 590 per year goes up next year my bike will be posted here for sale.

If it were not for all the insurance scammers I am sure the rates would be ok, but when paying out the arse for years and you egt a chance to scam it is hard to blame someone for doing so.

Vicious circle I guess.

Some of you may want to consider putting Antique Tags on your old Wings, and then getting Antique Bike INsurance. I have JC Witney, and for my 83 Wing, it is only about $60/year.....but no medical insurance on it. You are supposed to have it garaged, and only drive limited mileage........but well worth thinking about. I have had antique cars almost all my life, and have used JC Taylor insurance, and they are superb. Had someone run into one old classic truck, and JC Taylor paid the full amount to repair, without any deductible. No fuss, no muss, no issues at all.

In Kentucky, if your vehicle is more than 25 years old, you can get Historic Plates. Same as above; supposed to only drive in shows, parades and the like. Mine are $25 a year and insurance for FULL coverage is $45/6 months. Something to think about if your state offers it....

All that is fine until you get in an accident, that's your fault , with 10,000/15,000 coverage limits.... and it was a Mercedes, Porsche and semi with a load of Tvs' and you are on the hook for $100,000++ in damages..there goes your house...paycheck etc. Or a or with an uninsured or under insured..and yoiu have to make up the difference for yourself.. If you have no assets and are single worth no kids etc. or old and poor with nothing anyone could take from you maybe it's worth the risk but if you've got assets and you want to protect them get higher limits...and pay more...and no I am not an insurance agent!

^^^I agree 100% I have 100K/300K liability; it just doesn't cost all that much more. Since I have the bike, truck and car with the same company, bike insurance is dirt cheap.

RBGerson.....Well, the coverage at JC Taylor is much higher and better than you are saying. You can opt for 100k or 300k, and also have uninsured motorist coverage, towing, and more. Infact, most people have a deductible with their various insurances, and with JC Taylor, I had no deductible......they pay 100% of any damages. A helluva bang for the buck. The only drawback is that someone who rides alot of mileage does not qualify.......but for those who enjoy the weekend joy ride, or to classic events, then this is a great insurance package.

I'd check with an insurance broker. I was with Jevco, but after they sold - my broker (also a wing rider and family) switched us to Wawanesa. Insurance went from $250+ down to $110 a year - and the same coverage.

250 plus for a goldwing? I would have been thrilled with that.

I'll second that motion. I think Insurance in Alberta is done differently then Ontario.
Since we have to either choose either $1,000,000 or $2,000,000 PL & PD, how much coverage does one get for $110 in Alberta? Can we get Wawanesa to cover Ontario riders for $110? I think we are getting ripped off and need to lobby for better rates.

We get almost the same coverage as with our car/truck - no loss of use, no glass, etc. My house, truck, van and 5th wheel are are with the same company - making for a lower rate. I was surprised when I went from $250 with Jevco to $110 with Wawanesa.

The only hitch is we have to send in our motorcycle premium rather than direct withdrawal like the rest of our insurance.
