Fuel Tank level

Postby 1fastgl1100 » Thu Apr 25, 2013 3:15 pm

I need to replace the fuel Gauge on my 1982 GL1100a (the factory gauge is not readable) I have been looking at gauges and been told I need to replace the sending unit. but I cant find out what the factory sending unit operates at.... its a 12v system and someone has said it should be a 0 to 140 ohm sending unit... does anyone know if this is factual?

It is not a 12 volt system, the fuel and temperature gauges run on a 7 volt regulator, so the gauges run at 7 volts, not 12.

The GL1100 fuel gauge should read 75-80 ohms at empty, and 6-10 ohms when full.

There is no way that that is correct.... maybe 6 to 10 ohms empty and 75 to 80 ohm full and where is the regulator located that reduced 12v down to 7volt I cant find it anywhere

I don't think I would be questioning WingAdmin, he knows his stuff. And he is correct by the way. When I removed and tested my sending unit I got 11ohms full, 88 ohms empty. You can ckeck Scotts 82 gl1100 rebuild thread and Gregs winter rebuild thread for pics of the tests.

Those numbers are directly out of the Honda service manual.

The 7 volt regulator is mounted in the back of the center pod, between the speedometer and tachometer, about halfway down.
