Rattling sound upon acceleration?????

Postby Britanicus » Wed May 01, 2013 2:56 am

I get a lot of rattling sound when accelerating, expecially from a start.

Is this valve clearences or timing chain?

if the rattling sound is at lower rpm, under 1500, then it's probably the primary chain. a carb sync usually fixes this.
WHAT IS THE SPEED OF DARK?

Correct. That horrible rattling sound when at low RPM and high load (i.e. accelerating from a start) is your primary chain, and like trashtruck said, the #1 way to resolve (or at least mostly eliminate) it is to sync the carbs.

How do you sync the carbs?

I have not yet tried it. I know they haven't been synced in like 3 + years so I know it is time.

When syncing the carbs....after each adjustment, readjust the engine back to 1000 rpm and adjust again....You really want a accurate sync in the RPM range that it's most noticeable..

Some recommend at a idle....900 rpm or so....I found the best for my 3 wings were at 1100 rpm.Just where i needed the power to get going.
They would sync at 900... but because of a slight imbalance in compression it still had a minor rattle as I accelerated in the 1000-1200 rpm range so I synced them there to stabilize it.The idle did suffer just a little.... but just a little.

OK, So I got my Carb Sync Stick,

Got is hooked up, only sucked a bit of mercury into the carbs (lol, forgot to move the res hose from the closed to the open peg.)

seems like the bike is better now, however still have a question. When I touch the box wrench to the bolt that holds the brass screw tight the revs on the bike drop and the carbs appear to be closely synced. When I remove the wrench however the carb stick shows that 2 and 4 are closely synced and 1 and 3 are closely synced but 4/2 and 3/1 are not even close.

Why is it that touching that bolt or even the screw drops revs on the bike but balances out the 4 carbs according to the carb stick?

The bike appears to run better, still very rich but the low rev rattle (primary chain) seems more or less gone.

The throttle valves are secured wih a tension spring.A little pressure can disturb them and just a tiny turn is enough to upset it.
Just keep after it.....adjust. little and check, tap the throttle and adjust again.
