Spark Plug Readings

Postby tunaboy » Mon May 06, 2013 8:27 am

I have pulled my plugs twice and # 1,2,and 4 look a little lean but all in all pretty good. When I pull the #3 plug it is sooty, not terrible but some dry soot. Any ideas? The bike runs good but I am confused as to why plug 3 is different than the others.

#3 is getting to much fuel, soot is unburned gas. You eather have a float setting wrong/needle valve seat bad or idle jet set to rich. Also you could have a spark plug bad or coil wire, switch plugs with one of the others and see if it gets sooty, if it does then the plug is good, still could be a wire. pull the plug and ground it to the cyl. head to check the wire, if it sparks then you have a carb problem as above.

Is the idle jet the one with the small aluminum cap that keeps it from rotating unless the float bowl is dropped? Would I screw it in to lean the mixture out or screw it out to lean the mixture?

Thanks,
Tuna

Yes the idle jet is the one under the float bowl, screw in for lean , out for richer. I would check the spark plug and wire first, if they are OK then adjust the idel and see if that cures the problem. If the idel does not help, then you will have to go into the carb. #3 might have a sticking float/needle problem, or float out of adjustment. Hope this help.

Hi Tunaboy, this site has a service manual section where you can down load the Honda manuals for your bike, if your computer has enough memory. The manual will take care of 95% of all your needs for your bike, the other 20% will be taken care of on this forum, yes that adds up to 115%, and that extra 15% is all the expertise on this site that will explain what the manual is telling you to do and all the short cuts not in the manual. There is more hands on brain power on this site then could ever be put in the manual, starting with the best Admin. I have seen on at least 3 other sites Im on, including BMW and Suzuki.

Here is the site for the manuals.

It sounds to me like the idle jet itself is clogged, pull the carbs and remove the idle jet to that cylinder[unscrew it] inspect and clean up the passages then screw it back in and it should burn fuel like the other three are..
