4th gear chatter (gear not engaging on throttle) 80 GL1100

Postby mmcglenen » Tue May 07, 2013 7:15 pm

I have a 1980 GL1100i with 67,000 miles on it.
It shifts fine into 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 5th. When I shift it into 4th from 3rd or 5th and give it any throttle at all it clatters as if the gear is trying to engage but the clutch won't let it. I adjusted the clutch cable as best I can but no change.
Magic wand anyone?

I'm cant say for sure but it sounds like a burnt shift fork, that what it was on mine. I had to crack the case to change it. it was pretty labor intensive and a real pain in the a$$ to put back together... might be beneficial to just buy a good used motor to put on it. Attached are pictures of my experiences. The top photo is of the burnt fork and the one I replaced it with. The bottom is of course the case half that contains everything......

Thank you for your reply! For some reason I missed this when you posted it - it sounds like what you described is probably my situation. I think I'll be taking over the garage for a project soon...

Tplumlee, can I ask what the mileage was on yours? I would imagine there were some steel shaving at the bottom of the engine geez..really good information by the way.. thanks for the photo's... Is this something common on these engines?
