GL1100 bearing retainer tool

Post by t2oldbikes » Sat May 11, 2013 6:40 am

After looking at the tool ground out of a 1 1/4 socket to remove the bearing retainer on the 1100 rear wheel to redo the wheel bearings I wondered if anyone has the dimensions for the hole size and hole pattern on the retainer.
if you know the size of the holes (4, 5, 6mm) and/or the spread on the pattern whether between adjacent or opposite holes
please post it. Would prefer to make the tools before starting the job. Also am pretty much of a hack on the bench grinder!

While searching for specs on the GL1100 (front and rear) wheel bearing retainer tool, this post turned up. Like the previous contributor, I would also like these dimensions if anyone has a "spare" retainer they can measure, or has a tool they can measure and post up the dimensions to make one of each tool. OD / ID and diameter(s) of holes / slots would be awesome. I think I can get a machinist friend to turn out a set for me with a hex milled into the body so I can use a socket to pull the retainers.
I have a 1981 GL1100 sitting under my carport waiting on front and rear bearings, tires and timing belts to be changed. I guess I can get them out with needle-nose pliers, but I'd rather use the correct tools, since it isn't my motorcycle ....

Thanks in advance
I am wrong as often as I am right concerning what is wrong with someone else' motorcycle without having seen the machine in person. Guessing with limited information, as to the source of the trouble, is sketchy at best.
