Lets hope its like all the wings that have been parked on the side stand for quite a while and oil has seeped past the rings. The nature of the flat boxer engine when left at a angle, oil runs up the backside of the pistons.
Some have called them "The fogger"
I had to leave in a hurry once after riding my 1100...I shut it down and left it on the side stand(I have plenty of oil in it too)...when I cranked it up 2 weeks later,it took almost 1/2 hour in the yard and 2 miles of driving to get it cleared out.
If it dosen't clear up within a hour of driving, oil is migrating onto the cylinders.Usually from the intake valve guides and seals.

Yes, I have that problem also. It goes a way after a while. If it has sat sometimes it takes about 5 minutes or so to clear up but it always clears up.

Does your problem clear up after it has been running for a while?

My wing also emits bluish Oil smelling smoke from the left hand cylinder bank even after a careful total overhaul incluyding new valves, guides and seals etc etc using all new parts .It smokes even if left on the centre stand. Generally whiute smoke is water getting into the cyliders for the cooling system, if anti freeze is in the cooling water then a sweel smell will be noticible as the glycol is burning in the "smoke"
Strange thing is that if I run it it smokes blue but if I shut it down and wait 5 minutes before starting again there is no smoke.? This is baffling me!!!
Also sometimes it smokes on start up and sometimes it does not? Compressions are all 171 PSI and oli level is correct not overfilled.
I very carefully ensured that the new pistion rings where gapped top and bottom of the bores and that they where fitted the correct way according to the manual.
I have tried the standard oil, a heavier grade and even semi synthetric to no difference to smoking.
Any ideas?

A thought....does your bike have a crankcase breather/filter canister and is it ported back to the intake?
The canister may have an abundance of oil in it and once in a while gets purged into the carb.
Just a thought .

Virgin moblie thanks for the response, good point but I have tried taking the breather pipe off the engine and it makes no difference.

To test to see if the White Smoke is actually water vapor, just hold your hand in front of the tail pipe where the smoke is appearing and see if moisture is left on hand. If your had is wet, then the white smoke is water vapor. Easy way to tell if you have a blown head gasket or not.

Another thought is a bad head gasket? I know this is unlikely but just throwing ideas out there.

Thanks fotr the advice its appreciated but the smoke is blue with no condensation apparant. I have had the head off twice with new guides seals and valvce sfitted and the new rebores aref ine, the compression is 175psi, new guides and valves and seals and head gasket each time. I wonder if i could have put the oil control rings in wrongly even though I followed the manual very carefully.
I must admit I am tired of this problem and thus plan to take the engine out AGAIN as I hate oil smoke.

Ive noticed it on my 82 gl1100 too. when left on sidestand like the guys have said, clears quickly though.

Try it when your on centerstand I bet you'll notice it less.

I figure on an old bike as long as I'm not fogging for mosquitoes once I get going done the road I'm cool (smile)

Its the same on both stands. I always leave the bike on its centre stand when its in my garage only use the side stand when out and about.
