Speedo Cable gone bad?

Postby Britanicus » Fri May 17, 2013 5:21 am

So I was riding home form work this morning and I started hearing a whining sound seemed to be coming form the dash. It kind of sounds like a teapot whistling.

I then noticed that my speedo is jumping around like mad.

No loss or change in performance or anything so I am assuming it is just my speed cable or whatever it is called?

Big job to repair?

Advise or suggestions please.

Noticed this thread : viewtopic.php?f=11&t=2011 seems simple enough, the immediate question is can I drive with it buggered? I know the speed by the tac and sound of engine. But will the speedo cable bugger something up if not immediately attended to?

Till it can be tended to....remove the cable from the front wheel and secure it....

Eventually the cable will just bind and fail, and you'll have no speedo at all. Just replace the cable. They're not that expensive.

You could try cleaning it..take it off at the bottom, pull the cable out..clean it with solvent, lube it with silicone or chain lube or ???, your choice..shove it back in wiggle it a little to get it to seat in the speedo housing if needed..re attach and go????

IF you really want to clean completely loosen the top nut under the speedo and while the cable is still in there squirt some solvent in and ride it around the block now do the above plus squirt some solvent in the top end while the cable is out to flush to cable housing out.

Backyard mechanic methods :D
HAD LOTS OF GOLDWING 75-83

Seers,

i believe not the cable, but the speedo itself has gone bad.
I had the same symptoms at mine, the noise, the dancing needle, that needs time to go back.
I made call to a repair-shop for analog gauges and chronometers and the boss told me, that in most cases the bearing of the magnet has been worn out so the rotating parts are clamping.
Check the speedo cable, if its running.

I had noise coming from speedo cable on my wing. I removed cable from bike and tried to remove cable from housing. It wouldn't budge started spraying graphite and working it finally came out. Cleaned it up with brake clean you wouldn't believe the crap that comes off of it. Lubed everything back up with graphite spray and installed it back in bike no more noise. :D Hope it last awhile.

Keep an eye out - generally when they start to make noise, they are past repair. Lube will help put off the inevitable for a little while, but it's only a matter of time. Speedo cables are relatively inexpensive.
