Gl1100 ignition basics show and tell

Postby virgilmobile » Fri May 17, 2013 10:46 am

I'd like to show how the ignition system works.....simplified...
The Gl 1000-1200 ignition systems are very simple in design...Only a few parts are involved.
Some have changes between models but the basics remain the same....
Power to the coil and ignition module and a pulse coil...
Here's a schematic broken down to one coil. The second coil has the same wiring.
I am going to reuse a 33 year old set on a Kohler 20hp twin that uses points, thus the purpose of the bench test....

So,if you don't have spark...these are the minimum parts needed and where volts and ground are required...

Lovely. Always like your posts. Accept I have a primitive knowledge of the subject.

How do the ignition module and pulse coil work?

The module is an off-on switch?

What triggers the pulse coil?

Great demo, Sometimes we can get wrapped up in all the wiring involved but all of it can be eliminated for testing purposes with this simple setup. Is it a sticky, It should be.

The pulse trigger coil is a winding of very small wire. It has a metal core and the core is magnetized.
When the magnetic field is disturbed,it's energy is released into the winding producing a very small voltage.

The ignition module is a type of switch. When it receives the pulse/voltage,internal parts activate a heavy duty part that act like points.

The ignition coil, with 12 volts on the primary, gets pulsed by the module.Actually grounding the coil briefly at each pulse.
The pulse in the small winding is a collapsing magnetic field and is dumped into the large winding producing the spark.
The ignition coil windings are something like 1 rap/turn input to 1000 raps/turn output so for every volt discharged into the coil,1 thousand volts is output.

The pulse coil and module replace The old points and condenser system.

Very interesting and informative, thanks. Just a couple of questions. In your video, are the plugs themselves grounded and 2) does the pulse coil have voltage going to it through either the blue or the white wires that are connected to the spark unit? Just not sure how that magnet works.
