Water tube 'O' rings and gaskets

Postby aznyaz » Sun May 19, 2013 7:19 am

I'm in the process of rebuilding my carbs and upon removal I noticed I had a coolant leak from the left side water tube where it turns into the elbow that connects to the head. So I got all my 'O' rings and gaskets to do the repair on both sides and I'm wondering if we use any kind of sealant on our GL's like RTV, etc. on the gasket or do we put them on dry which is what my old ones looked like (not really sure, though)?

Thanks.

MJ

Lightly lube them with petroleum jelly so they slide in easily, and don't roll out of their intended location.

Yes, that part I know. I was asking about the gasket where the joint attaches to the head. Any thoughts, info., opinions?

When I did mine (same one as yours) made sure the gasket surface was meticulously cleaned and just put it in dry. Have not had a problem with it. Make sure to use silica free anti-freeze on refill.

Got the old gasket cleaned off of both head and joint surfaces. Thanks for the info.

Still looking for some more info on this. Is there a definative answer to whether you should use a gasket sealer like RTV or Hondabond at the water tube joint fitting where it attaches to the head?

I don't have time to look in the book right now but then again a little bit of sealer can't hurt. My old gasket was a pain to get off so maybe they did use a bit of something or a gummy gasket.
