'83 Aspencade brake switch

Postby src68 » Sat May 25, 2013 7:00 pm

Hello, me again. first, could someone tell me how to search the site well for answers to question like this? it probably was answered, but i am not searchy inclined...
anyway. i took a pic of the hand brake lever switch. just got this bike, and the prev. owner said i need to replace the switch. i have an 83 interstate that i can use for parts... but like i said, can't tell what i need to do. attached is the pic of the wires NOT connected... don't know what to connect them too, after i switch the switch. (don't know how to do that either..) if anyone can help, taht would be great. thanks.

the switch is usually held to the bottom of the handle holder with a screw. remove old switch, install new switch, hook up wires to the 2 metal prongs on the switch (i don't think it matters which wire goes where) and off you go.

Hi src68. I'm not great at searching the forums either, but maybe I can help you with that a little bit. Below is a pic of the search bar page and how I go about a search.

1. Hover your mouse over the forum button. And then choose which forum you want to do a search of.
2. I happen to be in the GL1100 Info and Questions forum.
3. In this search box, type in what you are trying to search for. Try to be specific without using too many words, for instance type in...front brake light switch.
4. Hit search after you have typed what you want, and there will be a list with the words you are searching for highlighted in red. If you can't find anything pertinent to what you need, maybe try typing different words.

It may take a bit to learn it, but this little info may help you get started.

as long as everything lines up and the handle activates the switch when you pull it, i don't think it cares how it gets attached.

ok. i took out the screw on my Interstate. nothing came off. so then i took a flat head screw driver and tried to see if i could pry off the part that the screw was connected too. A part with two prongs (to connect the wires too) came off along with a little metal rod etc. it idd't look like the part below.

AND i don't see at all where i can connect it on my Aspencade. i will record a video and try to put it on here tonight.... Uhhgg.. i love riding.. but don't know much on if anything brakes or doesn't work. wish there were a class around MN i could take to learn about fixing bikes....

You should be able to easily remove and clean the contacts inside the switch.
Don't worry, the innerds fit into there own grooves so you won't mess it up.
1 remove the switch
2 split the casing along the seem.
3 clean contacts
4 reinstall

i think when i took the switch off, some small 'inerds' got lost. Do you know a part number i can tell a bike shop? (hitching post is close to me...)
i just want to get the right part.

thx
