Can i jump start my 1100 using a truck?

Postby Paulo Alves » Sun May 26, 2013 3:08 pm

I just got a new starter in place but the battery is dead so I want to know if it is safe to jump start the bike using my truck.
Thanks,
Paul.

as long as the truck is not running you should be ok. i wouldn't make a habbit of it and would suggest investing in a charger/maintainer as well as having the battery tested/replaced.

I think we all would love it if there was a handy little kick-starter on our old Wings, so we dont have to always try to park on the high-spots so we can get a roll-start when we are sporting around with a failing battery.

I have used jumper cables before, but there sure isnt alot of room for the + cable, and be sure you dont ground it out against that shiney chrome saddle bag guard.......mine now has a small "welding mark" there.

I weigh about 200 lbs, but I can actually push start my GL1100 by myself. Its a little nerving, but it can be done.

Im thinking about rigging up a contraption on the back tire so I can just take out a rope, wrap it around the back tire, put her in third, turn on the key, and give her a fierce pull.

Then again, maybe old-fashioned spurs would work?

Woe mule! When I say woe, I mean woe!!!

One trick I used to do when I drove tow truck, was to use either a couple of screwdrivers or some other long metal object ( like a socket extension ), and attach the cables to them, then touch those to the battery. Just be sure that you are not hanging on to any of the metal portion of the screwdriver or you will end up jump starting your day! This worked really well on some of those "other" bikes that have the battery hidden under the seat with poor access.
