GL1100 won't shift past 2nd

Postby buhsboy » Sun May 26, 2013 4:31 pm

Hi, just got done changing the water pump and timing belts. took it out and will only shift into 1st, netural, and 2nd. What did I do wrong, followed the directions from this site on the changing of the water pump. On the positive side, no leaks, thanks for any ideas or help.

What kit did you use? Some poor quality kits (like the ones Saber Cycle sell) have cheap, paper-thin gaskets that do not move the water pump cover out far enough. There are very tight clearances behind the cover, and if the cover is too close, it will bind up the shift mechanism where it is supposed to be rotating the neutral switch.

I used the kit from Cyclemax which was recommended from the post on this site about changing the water pump. What should my next step be?

That kit should be fine. My next step would be to loosen the bolts holding the front cover in place and see if the problem resolves itself.

Does the neutral light come on correctly (i.e. on when it is in neutral, off in all other gears)?

The light will go off when I shift into 1st and up to second and will come on again when I go back to netural. I will try loosen the trans cover bolts ( I have a record of over tighten things) and see if that resolves the issue. Thanks for staying with me on this issue. I have a couple of newer bikes, but really like the older wings and trying to learn how do my own repairs. Was over joyed after changing the water pump and timing belts and she started right up and purred like a kitten. Can't let this shifting problem beat me:) I report the out come tonight, thanks again.

WingAdmin you were right on the money, went and loosen each bolt on the trans cover and just snugged them down. Shifts like a new bike and no leaks after about a 80 mile ride. Wasn't sure about changing the water pump and timing belts, but now that I've done it, not to bad. Wouldn't have not even tired if I didn't have your step by step with pictures to follow. Thanks, this is a great site. I'm guessing with a30+ year old wing, I'll be back. Thanks again.

Great, glad to hear you're back in business.

When torquing bolts into aluminum like that, you really should use a torque wrench to torque them to the correct values, or you will end up in a world of hurt one day (broken bolt, stripped threads, etc).
